Chapter 28: Varick and Twig Shelter in Cave
Powdered crystals formed little clouds around Twigβs hooves as they ran. The crystal wyrm was hot on the white and brown jackalopeβs cotton ball tail. Desperate to not be the serpent dragonβs next meal, Twig ran faster than they thought they were previously capable. The jackalope quickly ducked around a rocky outcropping ahead, hoping to lose their pursuer. The massive head of the wyrm starting to peer around the rocks made Twig panic and cried glowing tears. As the beastβs tongue was about to find its next meal, a hand roughly grabbed the jackalope and pulled them into a cave.
βStay quiet, and youβll be safe,β a mahogany Clydesdale ordered in a hushed tone as he started to cover the cave entrance with a large piece of dark cloth. Despite the lack of natural light in the cave, it was lit reasonably well by the glow from a herd of volai huddled in the cave.
βTh-th-thank you,β Twig stuttered, unsure they were safer in the cave. The blonde horse finished pinning that cloth to the rock face and tapped it. Magic flowed through the slight touch and caused the fabric barrier to blend into its surroundings.
βDonβt mention,β the brown Clydesdale laughed as he held out his hand. βMy name is Varick. Normally, Iβm a tailor, but I guess Iβm a volai and jackalope savior today.β
βT-T-Twig,β the rabbit hybrid nervously shook the horse tailorβs hand. βH-h-how long d-d-do you think we will be here?β
βProbably until someone puts that crystal wyrm down,β Varick answered as he pulled a pack of cards out of his bag. βWant to learn how to play Icewind Dragons?β A nod from Twig was all Varick needed to teach a new friend his favorite card game.
