A Song for Winter: New Sword

Chapter 38: New Sword

There was no more time left to delay. William needed a new weapon as his sword and ax were shattered and gone. He needed something versatile that could be easily used in almost all situations with ease. Something that could be used easily in one or two hands depending on the amount of strength needed to be put behind the strike. Most importantly it needed to be a sword of some sort because as much as William could use any weapon with deadly efficiency, swords were always his favorite. There was just something about swords that made him feel unstoppable.

In his travels, William had the chance to discover all kinds of new weapons that he had never seen before. One such weapon that had interested him was the bastard sword. It would increase his melee reach while also filling out most of the criteria for the type of weapon William was looking for. The length of the blade didn’t fit the specifications he was looking for but William had an idea to fix that without losing out on anything. After traversing a couple of portals to gather supplies and talking to a few experts on elemental items everything was set to get underway.

After pulling fresh iron from the earth and cleaning it up, William heated it up before shaping it into a bar. Next using blue aster he formed a second bar from the foreign metal. With these bars formed William reheated both of them before splitting them into small pieces uniform-sized pieces. Carefully he stacked the pieces in an alternating stack before using a hot wire to weld them together. This neat stack of metal was superheated in the forge before being repeatedly hammered and reheated till it all became one piece of metal. With the Damascus billet of iron and blue aster finished it would become the base for his new weapon.

Using his hammer and anvil to shape the billet, William set to making the handle for his new sword. Starting with a traditional Carolingian design handle William made a few modifications to the design. He kept the u-shaped guard and the medallion pommel but he extended the length of the handle out to more of the size of a bastard sword handle. In the medallion pommel William inset a water pearl to enchant the weapon. William took great care over many days to carve intricate runes and spells into both sides of the handle guard. With that task completed William wrapped the handle in a brown leather wrap before dumping the whole handle in a barrel of water for a week to charge the water pearl in the pommel.

A week later William came back to find the handle in an empty water barrel. Satisfied with this William pulled the handle out and grasped it firmly in his right hand. With a spark of raw magic the water pearl caused water to flow from the handle in the shape of a blade. Smiling he released the spark of magic making the water blade disappear. Whistling a few notes of the Winter Song, William sent frigid air magic in the sword handle activating all the runes and spells carved upon it. Instantly a blade of enchanted ice forms from the handle as the air and water magic combine into one. Experimenting for a while William found that he could directly control the length of the blade to suit his needs. Although it was made of ice the blade was sharper and harder than any metal weapon William had ever seen. Happy with his new sword William set about readying for whatever the next battle would be.
