A Song for Winter: Smithing Armor - Chest

Chapter 31: Smithing Armor - Chest

With William’s forge rebuilt it was time for him to make himself new armor for his upcoming battle. His old armor was nice but after everything he had been through in the last year alone, it was starting to show its age in more than one way. For this new armor,r he would be using silver aster and fire pearls as his crafting material. These were materials he wasn’t familiar with but had found whilst traversing the portal network. After conversing with some artisans familiar with the aster and pearls, William felt more than confident enough to be able to forge what he needed.

The silver aster, fire pearls, and William’s old chainmail went into the forge till each piece was hot enough to be forged together into a single billet. William’s hammer struck in rhyme upon molten metal upon his anvil. Drawing out the billet he split it into three different pieces. Two pieces were set aside for now while the third was reheated and drawn out repeatedly. After quite a bit of time, the billet was drawn out into long wires. Then came the arduous task of weaving the wires into links to make chains for his chainmail. Once complete the new chainmail shined a silver-blue with a slight fire aura around it.

William took a day off to relax before returning to work in his forge. Taking another piece of the split billet William heated it before starting to hammer it on his anvil. As the hammer struck rhythmically upon the metal, William carefully split the metal again into two pieces. Both pieces were carefully given an arch shape before refining them to match the shape of his arms and hands. The measurements were so precise from William’s many years of blacksmithing experience that only William’s hands would fit in this new gauntlet. Anyone else would find the match set entirely too uncomfortable to be used properly. Just like the chainmail, they shined a silvery blue with a slight fire magic aura about them. Wearing them felt good on William’s hands and the leather straps made sure they weren’t going anywhere. While they were made of tough unyielding metal the hinges and joints being crafted so meticulously made them nice and flexible.

Looking up the last piece of the original metal billet William set it aside for a day again before returning to his forge. Once again he heated the metal and started hammering away on it. Flattening it out with his sheer ferocity and repeated perfectly timed strikes, William once again began to take careful measurements. Shaping the metal into a breastplate that would protect his heart, lungs, and other vitals from the front while also keeping it lightweight was a bit of a challenge but in the end, William prevailed. Like the other pieces, it shone a silvery blue while emitting a slight fire magic aura. This piece of armor would be great protection for William’s front while offering no protection to his back which was fine. He wasn't going to run from any more battles.

Now to prepare for a fight William put on his quilted armor over which he put his new chainmail. Over the top of the chainmail went his traveling clothes with William’s belts and sheathes. Strapping on the breastplate by himself was a little tricky but the buckles he put on the back straps helped a bit. After throwing on his cloak, William strapped on his gauntlets giving them a could flex to make sure the joints were still in good working order. Satisfied with his work William re-equipped his weapons ready to fight whatever came to threaten his daughter or him next.
