A Song for Winter: Morning Routine

Chapter 45: Morning Routine

William woke up before even the sun was up every morning to begin his day. He pulled on his clothes and armor before quietly sneaking out of the house for a light five-mile run. On his run, William would check on how his small army's training was going that day on his route around the village back to his house. If the captains had the cadets out doing weapon exercises William would stop to exercise with them for a bit. Otherwise, he would continue back to his house to practice armed and unarmed fighting with his training dummy. As the sun started to rise in the sky William called an end to his morning training routine.

Training complete William carefully snuck back into the house to begin cooking breakfast for his daughter Jaina, fiancee Violet, and himself. Most mornings breakfast consisted of fried eggs, ham or bacon depending on what William was feeling that morning, and a few slices of bread. While cooking, William would open the kitchen window for his raven-familiar Viggo to fly in and perch on the countertop. If Viggo had any messages for William the large raven would relay them at that time otherwise the corvid would impatiently wait to be thrown a piece of meat. About the time the food was finished cooking the other occupants of the house began to stir.

Violet usually woke up next appearing in the kitchen to greet William with a hug and a kiss before going outside to commune with nature and the Allmother. Somehow the druid lioness looked like the picture of grace and beauty despite just having woken up moments before. While Violet was finishing her morning prayers, William would wake up his daughter Jaina. Some days this was an easy task while other days William practically had to walk the young half lynx to the table for breakfast. The two of them would wait for Violet to come back in before digging into breakfast as a family.

After breakfast, Violet would take Jaina outside for a combat lesson whilst William cleared the table and washed the dishes. Viggo usually hung around at this point only too eager to take care of any leftover food scraps. William would tease the raven about how it needed to hunt for food instead of begging for scraps. The raven would then repeat one of the sears William taught it and the two would laugh for a bit before Viggo flew out the window to go hang around the village somewhere. As Violet finished up Jaina’s combat lesson for the day William went outside to begin his daughter’s magic lessons for the day. Jaina’s usage of the Winter Song differed from William’s but whether it was whistled rune notes or runes shaped by raw magic in the air in the end it was essentially all the same in the end. Most mornings followed the same routine for William but if he had the choice he wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
