A Song for Winter: Eventide Campaign 3

Chapter 19: Eventide Campaign 3

Willaim woke up in a small crater covered in dirt clutching the metal gauntlet that the weird spirit fox thing was carrying. Izre was already up and about looking around for any sign of that crazy storm from the night before. The two of them shrugged it off as corrupt wild magic gone amuck. As they were getting ready to set out the gauntlet William was holding started to magically tug on him as if to push him towards something. Looking in the direction he felt the tug William saw the ghost-like fox creature running off towards the ruins of a town.

With a shout, William ran off after the fox thing with Izre chasing close behind him. Every time the ghost being was within grasp it seemed to jump further ahead till it reached the remains of an ancient crater. Thinking they finally caught the thing William and Izre circled it only for it to disappear into the ground. Confused the duo stood there for a moment when the ground started shaking and moving. After a few minutes, the dust settled and all the shaking stopped to reveal a hole in the ground with a ladder leading down into darkness. Izre used her fire magic to light a torch before tossing it down the hole to check its depth. As the torch fell lights turned on in the hole revealing it to be some sort of structure, possibly a starship that plummeted to the planet and got buried.

Shrugging William descended the ladder first into the metal interior of the structure. Izre was immediately delighted as she stepped into the structure. There were all kinds of datapads and other bits and pieces of old tech for her to collect. William took a small look down a corridor to find a door with a gear design on it similar to the mysterious one in his bag. As he was about to see if it fit in the indentation he heard Izre scream echo down the halls. Rushing back to her he found the fox being standing in front of her wildly glowing red and yellow instead of its normal ghostly hues. The ghost thing grew in size substantial before dissipating with a pop. Suddenly a strange rattling noise started echoing around the halls as a bunch of skeletal sundogs glowing with the same red and yellow energy as the fox being.

Drawing his ax swiftly, William smashed the first one’s skull into dust. Unfortunately, this did nothing to stop the advancing horde. William tried his best to keep them at bay but one got through and managed to bite Izre on the arm. Grabbing the skeleton beast off of her William threw against the wall shattering its bones. Starting to whistle some notes from the Winter Song, William and Izre backed down the metallic halls as magic grew heavy in the air. Between ax strikes and punches, William summoned up a wall of air covering wall to wall before hurling it with all his magical might down the corridor. As the wall hit the skeletons it shattered them but they were quickly starting to reassemble themselves.

Running down the halls William and Izre took a wrong turn in the panic and wound up by the door with the gear indention on it. Backs to the wall William didn’t stop to think as he slammed the gear from his pack into the indention. With a stuttering start, the door slowly and creakingly swung open. William turned in time to smash another skeleton with his ax before pushing Izre through the door and pulling it shut behind himself. The door was holding shut but the skeletons were smashing against it with such force as it was threatening to buckle. Taking the moment to look at Izre’s wound William saw that it was radiating the same corrupt magic as the skeletons causing her great pain.

Looking around the room for anything that might help William spotted what appeared to be a suit of armor that was missing one gauntlet. Izre muttered something about it possibly being some sort of ancient automaton and it was a shame it wasn’t working as it might be of some use right now. Not being a fan of robots and the like William hesitated for a moment before reattaching the gauntlet he had the metal suit. At first, nothing happened but after a tense moment, it reached out, grabbed Izre’s wounded arm, and drained the corrupt magic from the wound. Realizing it probably used magic as an energy source William gathered as much magic as he could into his palms before pushing it into the machine. This infusion seemed to supercharge the thing as it began beeping and whirling. A series of beeps and it was tearing the door open and draining the magic from the skeletons. Finishing with them it set off down the corridors never to be seen again by William or Izre. The red demoness looted everything of value she could get before leaving the buried ship and setting off back towards Eventide with William.
