A Song for Winter: Favorite Outfit

Chapter 21: Favorite Outfit

William was not a man of high fashion by any means. Clothes were just viewed in the most utilitarian ways necessary. While he did have a pension for jewelry, William’s clothes rarely had the same thought put into them that a necklace or ring did. Only ever switching between two or three sets of clothing that were all the same with small variations between them. Despite this, William did always have a clear preference when it came to his travel armor. Not because it was fancy, colorful, or made him look imposing but rather because it reminded him of a time when he wasn’t just a boiling pot of rage and vengeance.

Suiting up each day started with a simple pair of black linen pants. Pants that were originally light tan and paid for with a crafted dagger. William eventually had the pants dyed black to hide bloodstains better. Next up was a long sleeve grey canvas tunic that was paid for with a bundle of razor-sharp metal arrowheads fresh off the anvil.  William debated having the tunic dyed black as well but realized that most blood from battle ended up on his armor, not the tunic. If William was in a situation where he wasn’t worried about being in constant danger he would tie a light leather belt around his waist and call it a day. Unfortunately for him, a time when that would be a day was far off for him.

Overtop the grey tunic next came a simple light cloth armor shirt as an extra layer of protection. Normally, this would make the whole outfit uncomfortable and hot but William grew up in the frozen northlands. This extra layer added protection and much-needed warmth to survive in the snow. A brown leather cuirass was buckled over the cloth armor shirt. The cuirass featured bronze rivets that were always shined to a perfect sheen. Darker leather vambraces that were reinforced with bronze and accented with more bronze rivets slipped up William’s arms next. Not being able to wear boots like most humanoids William opted for a set of brown leather greaves strapped into place with a black leather belt and a bronze buckle. To add further foot protection a set of leather gaiters were strapped to the greaves. Finally to complete the armor was a leather weapon belt with leather taussets protecting William’s thighs. To help support the weight of the sword and ax on the belt, a leather harness was strapped around William’s left shoulder. The last of the leather came with the black leather eyepatch emblazoned with a white othala rune covering the folf’s recently lost right eye.

The most important piece of clothing was the white cloak William put on over his back last. On the outside, the cloak was as white as fresh snow and on the inside was lined with grey reindeer fur for warmth, not that was a real issue with this cloak.  This cloak was a gift from William’s mother, Katherine Wintersong, who had enchanted it with a series of specialty spells and incantations. Of note in that series of spells was one that made William feel comfortable in any weather no matter what he was or wasn’t wearing along with the cloak. The cloak’s white color ability to blend into the snow was aided by a couple of the spells weaved into it making William almost invisible in fresh snow. All of these items stacked together made up William’s favorite outfit for utility and sentimental reasons.
