A Song for Winter: Music

Chapter 23: Music

Growing up William didn’t have exposure to a great variety of music. There were always drinking songs, war songs, and of course the Wintersong but outside that not much else. As a result, William’s taste in music was extremely stunted and underdeveloped. This is why when he set out on his journey through the portals, music wasn’t exactly a priority on the list of things William cared to find on his adventure. With this mindset, William had set out on what would become not only his greatest action adventure through the portals but also his greatest musical awakening that would forever leave its mark on the angry folf.

William’s first portal dropped him out in Avangard, the world in which all the inhabitants lived on airships. This new place with its weird new technology and mechanical constructs confused and infuriated William. While searching for a way out of this world that appeared to be a dead-end on his quest for vengeance William heard music playing. Music unlike any he had heard before. Suddenly curious he followed the sound of the music to find a street performer playing a magically amplified guitar of spare change. William had never seen a guitar much less a magical guitar before. He was simply blown away by the sound that this strange instrument made. Unfortunately, that would be his last exposure to this new fascinating sound for a while as the next day was when all the strange purple lightning started making the constructs go haywire before opening a portal off-world for William.

It wouldn’t be until William landed on Eventide that he would get a chance to pursue this newfound affinity for guitar music. Some of the leftover technology from the planet’s apocalypse that fell from the skies during the yearly fire fall was repurposed into amplifying the sound of musical instruments. William was thrilled to hear guitar music once more but the songs they played on Eventide were so much different than those that were played on Avangard. The music was loud, angry, and full of rage with lyrics about gods, monsters, and epic battles. Now, this was truly music William could relate to on an emotional level. Wanting to channel his anger and rage into music like this he set out to find a guitar for him to play. Unfortunately, they were pretty steeply priced since all the tech needed had to be harvested from the remnants of a fire fall. However, William did manage to find a beat-up used guitar that folded down to a pocket-sized piece of metal with the press of a button.

William wasn’t good at playing his new guitar at first but he just kept on playing till he was. Not being a singer he had to let the notes convey his feelings and emotions for him. After several weeks of practice, William figured out how to play the Wintersong on the guitar. It sounded so much different than the version he was used to but it still let him draw upon its magic with the help of his witch knife. The magic wasn’t as strong as normal but it was still there. Now whenever William gets the chance to play he does so with all his anger and fury so the world might embrace the sounds of pain, his love, his regret, and his anger from his music.
