A Song for Winter: Injury - Loss of an Eye

Chapter 15: Injury - Loss of an Eye

Pure excruciating pain was all that filled William’s vision as the seax was driven into his right eye. Not only had the dagger obliterated his eye leaving him on the verge of death it had also destroyed part of his skull around the eye. This injury along with the other wounds he had sustained during this fight left him on the verge of death. William would be seated at a table in Valhalla right not if the Allfather had not granted him his divine mercy. Partially blinded and in more pain than any mortal should ever feel William still beat his adversary to win the day.

After days of the best medical treatment on Eventide, William was mostly stitched back together. Despite the insistence from the medical staff, William wouldn’t let them fix his eye. That was his sacrifice to the Allfather for allowing him to keep fighting. The doctors took this as William just being stubborn but for him, it was a mark of honor he would carry for the rest of his life. Whilst recovering William had some leather brought to him from which he made an eye patch that he had dyed black with a large white othalla rune painted on it. Now all that saw him would know that he was a chosen of the Allfather.

Once William had been discharged from treatment the realities of living with only one eye set in rather quickly. With only one eye his peripheral vision was cut down by half with a large blind spot. After accidentally bumping into several people and merchant stalls William was left with two choices. He could either learn to adapt to this new reduced vision or he could use magic to sort of cheat the adaption process. The first was out of the question since William needed to get back to fighting shape as quickly as possible so magic was the answer. William decided that to keep a spell active at all times without constantly whistling a note from the Wintersong or concentrating furiously on it he would need something to play the note for him. Something like a small bell that he could tie to his witch knife and constantly jingle a soft note sending out a small pulse of air to act as a sort of radar. If this was going to work the bell needed to play a very specific note. Thus the hunt was on to find the perfect little bell.

Finding a small bell that played a very specific bell was going to be a difficult task but luckily the annual Firefall was coming soon and a lot of enterprising merchants had set up stalls early. Bells were in short supply as they were not exactly the type of ware a Firefall chaser would be looking to purchase. The few that William found were either too big or played the wrong note. Ready to give up his search William hears a cawing noise above him. Looking up he saw two ravens just as they dropped something and flew off. Picking up the object he found that it was a bell that played the very specific note William was looking for. Tying the bell to his witch knife and shifting its sheathe to his right side William set out. With the small pulses of air now coming from his right side, he could feel what was around him allowing him to compensate for his new large blind spot. It was still going to take time to get used to this new way of seeing but it was better than the alternative.
