A Song for Winter: William's Room

Chapter 46: William's Room

William’s bedroom was nothing more than a room where he slept at night. Clothing was often just thrown in the corners. Random looted weapons were stuck in the walls or cluttering the floors leaving gash marks on the wooden floor. The bed was the bare minimum mattress on a frame that was pieced together out of scraps of scavenged wood with the sheets often unmade and filthy. This all changed when William’s fiancee, Violet, moved in. Despite being a druid the purple-eyed lioness refused to sleep in filth.

With the use of her druidic magic, Violet fixed the holes in the wooden floors and walls. Weapons were organized and stored on a new weapon rack in a closet out of the way. After being prodded a bit William was coerced into painting the walls a nice subtle light grey color. Next came the black curtains that were enchanted to block light at night but allow light to flow in gradually in the morning. Clothing started to be cleaned and sorted into a set of dressers that Violet’s father, Archdruid Regalius hand carved himself from a mighty oak. The miserable excuse of a bed was replaced with a metal frame that Violet had William forge using a design from a distant world. On top of the new frame was placed a unique enchanted mattress that was ensorcelled with spells to promote good sleep and comfortability. Sheets, blankets, and pillows made of enchanted fabrics from distant lands that kept the sleeper from overheating or freezing topped the mattress.

At first, William was opposed to all the changes to what he viewed as his personal space but over time he started to like them. This was no longer just his room after all. With all the clothes getting washed regularly there was no longer a permanent funk in the air that hit those unaccustomed to it like a dragon attacking a sheep. William no longer had to worry about if he was going to trip or stub his toe on something that had been left on the floor. The dressers were exquisite works of art that made the hunt for clothing so much easier with everything sorted and folded into drawers. By far William’s favorite change to the bedroom was the bed. He had never known a bed could feel as good as that one did. William slept so much better and deeper than he ever had before and waking feeling well rested.

This was no longer just William’s room. It was now William and Violet’s bedroom. A room where they could be together at night after a long day. Where they could hold each other long into the night. A place where they could safely put a baby bassinet for their new child once they were born. This room would stand as a constant reminder that William was no longer alone with an unbearable ache in his heart. Most importantly this was a place William could wake up every day next to the woman he loved.
