A Song for Winter: Collection - Jewlery

Chapter 7: Collection - Jewlery

One may not assume it from just looking at William but he was an avid collector of jewelry. Sure he may have been an angry half-witch rage machine that was constantly looking for a good fight but when a nice piece of jewelry caught his attention he had to have it. Not out of some narcissistic desire to show off wealth, of which he had none, but rather because William appreciated quality craftsmanship. Sometimes looking through a merchant’s wares for just the right piece to add to the folf’s collection was enough to distract him from his quest to avenge his dead clanmates.

On William’s left hand on the middle finger, he always wore his favorite ring no matter what. Just glancing at the ring it looked like a mundane tungsten ring with a silver band around the center. However on closer inspection, one would find that the silver band was carved with an intricate set of runes that appeared and disappeared in the light. Each time the runes appeared they formed a new pattern that was only to be erased and rewritten moments later. The ring’s magical properties not only created the fancy rune patterns but also helped keep William’s magic under control so he didn’t accidentally expel too much power at once. If not for the ring’s influence William might’ve burned up the arcane circuits in his body a long time ago.

William only wore his favorite necklace on special occasions for fear of losing it in combat by accident. A simple black leather strap held an intricately carved silver medallion around the folf’s neck. The medallion had three interlocking triangles carved on the silver surface surrounded by runes calling out a prayer to the Allfather. This necklace had no arcane properties or special powers but William always kept it close at all times for sentimental reasons. William’s father, Odin Drackonas, had gifted this necklace to him as a birth moon gift one year.  Now that he was gone it was a nice reminder of his father he could hold tight when he needed wisdom.

Around William’s wrist rested a matching set of silver bracelets that once shone brightly but now had tarnished with age. The bracelets were dented and misshapen because William used them to block weapon strikes. While they weren’t meant to be used as shields they did the job. William was trained to use a proper shield but didn’t like not being able to use his talisman dagger because his hands were filled so some cheap bracelets worked as a replacement while allowing for higher mobility.

Not all of William’s jewelry served a practical, magical, or sentimental purpose. He had gold earrings that he never wore because the gems inset in them were carved beautifully. There were the strands of glass beads that William occasionally braided into his head fur for festivals. A belt buckle made of a deep red copper shaped like a dragon head with emeralds inlaid in the eyes. It didn’t matter what the piece was or how much he had to barter for it, if William saw a piece of jewelry he liked he was going to add it to his collection.
