A Song for Winter: Smithing - Greaves

Chapter 50: Smithing - Greaves

William knew that he didn’t have time to train up to even get close to being able to scrape at the power of The Matriarch. With that in mind, William decided the best course of action to begin to level the playing field was to start to craft more armor for himself. Already in possession of an elemental chest plate next on the list was leg armor. A normal set of leg armor wasn’t going to cut it this time. William needed something with a little extra power to it. Something that would help turn the tide of a battle. For that William decided to learn a little bit about magitech to incorporate it into his new greaves.

Once the forge was up to temperate, William added some silver aster with some iron and began working them till they were one solid billet. As he worked the billet William divided it into different equal-sized pieces. Each piece was measured and shaped carefully to fit around William’s legs comfortably. The pieces of metal were layer and fitted together to form flexible silvery blue metal greaves that protected William’s shins and down to the top of his feet. To finish this stage of the armor production process, rabbit fur was used to line the inside of the greaves for added comfort as well as leather straps to keep them in place.

With the armor part of these greaves finished William moved on to the next part of the production process. William riffled through a box of magitech odds and ends he had obtained to make these greaves. All the parts were foreign to him but after some time William found some small tubing and a few vent-like pieces. The hardest part of this whole build was getting all the small pieces to fit together in the correct configuration. Once William, had two of the little devices put together he carved runes all over them and the silvery-blue surface of the greaves that spelled out a combination of a dozen or so spells. That complete each device was fitted into a small niche in each greave with tubes that ran to the vents that were hooked onto the outside faced down and back.

William strapped on the greaves to do some proper testing. After he tested the flexibility of the layered construction William found a tree and kicked it as hard as he could. The greaves and William’s shins held up just fine but a decent-sized chunk of the tree trunk splintered. A grunt of approval sounded from William as he inspected his greaves for any damage only to find none. For the next test, William started running as fast as he could. A spark of magic activated the small magitech devices in the greaves which caused air magic to start blasting from the vents. At first, it was only a small bit of air but after a few moments, it became a steady stream of air that enveloped William and caused him to pick up speed as he ran. His strides became further apart as he gained more and more speed. Eventually, William wasn’t on the ground anymore as he ran. William stopped his run and simply stood in the air for a bit to marvel at the fact that he was literally walking on air. The silvery blue color of the greaves sparkled in the sunlight as William stood above the clouds. With these greaves in his arsenal, William could start to even out the distance between himself and The Matriarch. They wouldn’t win the war for him but it was a start.
