Chapter 18: Portal Posi - borderline - 534 words

5. Draw or write about your character falling through a portal during the fight. Where do they end up? Does it help their attack or disrupt it?

Caspian fell to the ground, his upper back first. The half-wilted grass flattened under his weight as the packed soil only slightly gave in.

Posi was really getting on his nerves. He didn't care much about portals to begin with because of various reasons, and now this insane Thath had the audacity to just sweep solid ground from under his feet, and plop him somewhere, wherever that was.

The shifter's head felt weird as he slowly stood up. It wasn't from the fall, nor the hit that followed it. He didn't recognize it. It didn't feel like it was from getting forcefully portaled, either.

The sienna-colored, wooden buildings looked so ordinary, that it almost hurt Caspian's head. From the amount of the houses, he presumed the place to be a village. Probably a small one. Casual chatter and occasional laughter traveled in the air like the welcoming scent of a freshly cooked meal.

"You got to be kidding me."

The eternal turned to the foreign voice. In front of him stood a girl, seemingly somewhere in her teens, with long, dark hair, and wearing a white-and-blue, long dress. Her whole body looked stiff, her demeanor reading as a deer in the headlights.

"Excuse me?" Caspian inquired, almost offended. What did he do now? It wasn't like it was his fault that he ended up--

The girl rushed to him, climbed through his back to his shoulders, and covered his mouth with her hands. She had clearly done it many times before, which was odd to say the least. "Shush! If Caspian sees you, we're both in big trouble."

The Athos tried to pry the girl's hands off his face, but not wanting to hurt her, his attempts were in vain. What did she mean with Caspian? Big trouble? None of it made any kind of sense.

"Meri! You're going to miss the opening!"

The second strange voice Caspian could've sworn he recognized.

It sounded like his own.

The girl - presumably named Meri - hissed something under her breath and climbed down, frantically starting to look around.

A portal tore itself into the fabric of existence right next to them. It hummed menacingly, its golden edges rippling in an inviting rhythm. Caspian could feel the change in the air, as Meri breathed out a sigh of relief. Without a word, she circled behind the shifter, and began to push him towards the portal. He didn't resist much - he wanted to get going as much as she wanted him out.

Caspian peeked from behind a building. His tightly braided black-and-green hair swung with the movement. "There you are. Don't tell me you got lost."

"I did not!" Meri raised her voice at the green-tinted flagpole of a man. His body language questioned why the girl was out of breath, but his tongue didn't continue its curiosity. Meri jogged to Caspian, and joined his wait to see the traveling market go through the village once more.

She hoped she would forget the whole interlude quickly enough. It wasn't as easy for her, as it would be for that other Caspian. He wouldn't remember a thing - fortunately. At least some small things worked together with this world's peculiar quirks.
