Style Quest: Human Varick?

Chapter 49: Human Varick?

Today was the big day. Varick would finally pitch his clothing line to a big designer brand. One shower later, the tan-skinned man stood before a steamed-over mirror. A hand wipe cleaned the mirror, and the daily questions of what to do with his hair started. The long mane of blonde hair never quite did what he wanted it to. Time was short, so Varick combed it straight and put it in a ponytail. With a stretch, the tailor tapped the diamond-shaped birthmark on his back for luck before getting dressed.

The closet brought forth another debate that Varick didn’t have time for. Purple boxer briefs were an easy enough selection, along with the black dress socks. Should he wear something he made or maybe something else? After a few moments, the tan-skinned man chose his favorite blue vest suit. It never failed him before, so why start doubting it now? Black pointed-toe dress shoes came next without a second thought. Varick brushed his teeth, lightly misted on some cologne, collected his proof book, and then was out the door searching for breakfast.

At the coffee shop on the corner, the tailor found his fey friend, Raine, behind the counter. They smiled at Varick as he walked in to get his breakfast. Raine was dressed androgynously today, with the sun from the window illuminating their dyed grey hair’s blue and green highlights.

β€œHey Var-Var,” they eagerly greeted their boyfriend. β€œUsual today? Chocolate cookie frappe and an egg biscuit?” Raine was only supposed to have worked at the coffee place until their first painting sold, but that took a while.

β€œYes, and throw an extra shot of espresso in it,” Varick smiled as he pulled out his wallet. β€œHope you’re free tonight; I have a feeling we’ll be celebrating!” Raine had to stop them from getting too giddy. They hugged over the counter before making plans to meet later. It took a moment longer than usual to get the food and drink, so the blonde man had to eat on the run.

Morning traffic backed up the streets, so getting a taxi and being on time was out of the question. Varick needed to hoof it ten city blocks to make it to the fashion offices on time. Luckily, he had been doing extra cardio to stay healthy as a horse and to keep up with Raine. After a quick trip to the bathroom to freshen up, Varick took the elevator to his meeting. It was a difficult sales pitch, with all the designs scrutinized down to the last stitch, but in the end, every design sold.

Varick took Raine out for a fancy dinner at an Italian restaurant to celebrate the windfall. They went for a walk afterward that ended at Raine’s favorite ice cream parlor. Varick took to his knee as the ice cream was served and proposed.

β€œCan we still get ice cream,” Raine asked in shock.

β€œYes we can still have ice cream,” Varick answered with a smile.

β€œThen yes, of course, yes, yes, yes,” they shouted, dancing around so much it was difficult to put the ring on.
