Style Quest: Favorite Item - Messenger Bag

Chapter 6: Favorite Item - Messenger Bag

Aside from the sewing kit that made up his talisman, Varick always ensured he had his messenger bag. It had started life as a simple bag the Clydesdale had made of brown canvas to carry his school supplies. Over the years, though, it had been patched and mended so many times that it eventually needed to be entirely replaced. Varick spent several days making his new bag of blue canvas with a lining made from the scraps of the original bag. Glamour threads were sewn into the bag to make it able to change colors, but most of the time, the blonde horse had it stay blue. Across the front flap, he had emblazoned β€œVarick’s Tailoring” with a large stylized β€œVT” behind it.

Once the bag was fully assembled, Varick had to take it to an enchanter to put one last finishing touch on it. The sorcerer placed an enchantment on the messenger bag to increase its internal capacity beyond the normal limits. He had paid quite a bit of gold for that, but it was worth it. Every coin he earned for months went into buying it. On the outside, it looked like a typical canvas bag, but on the inside, it had tons of extradimensional space. There was more than enough room for Varick to fit extra sewing supplies and any wares he had to sell. Plus, the bag stayed lightweight and easy to carry, no matter how much he stuffed it.

With this new version of his favorite bag, the Clydesdale tailor could quickly sell his wares across the portal network without hiring a porter. This meant Varick was able to increase his profit margin exponentially. There was one slight issue with the bag, though. If the flap wasn’t secured properly and it was to be flipped upside down, all the contents would fall out. This wouldn’t be a big deal for most bags, but for one enchanted like this, it was. Piles of clothes and sewing supplies could be spilled all over the street if Varick wasn’t careful. He was a bit ashamed to admit it had happened more than once. Once, the horse lost several spools of thread and needles when he tripped over a rock and forgot to button his bag.

Over the years, Varick had made several other accessories he liked, but none beat the messenger bag. Its form, function, and style fit the mahogany Clydesdale’s needs. Several people had tried to buy the bag over the years, but Varick refused to sell to any of them. He made them similar but couldn’t enchant them to be like his. The horse tailor wished he could because he could sell them at a much larger markup. Varick would have to stick to glamor and spell-threading his wares. Magic like the kind needed for that kind of enchantment was beyond him. It was just as well, though; if there were more than one messenger bag like his in the world, it would make it feel less remarkable.
