Chapter 26: Surprise?
An alarm blared, waking Varick from his dead slumber. Red lights blinked as the siren continued to blast. The horseβs boyfriend, the kobold named Tay, wasnβt in bed. Briefly, Varick panicked, then remembered that his bedmate had an early cycle delivery. Leaping from the bed in nothing but a pair of blue boxers, the Clydesdale grabbed his pet volai Layla who was also panicking. There was no time to calm her, so Varick picked the volai up and ran. Red lights and sirens meant there was a fire somewhere on the ship. Like in the safety briefing, the horse headed to the nearest fighter launch bay.
Varick practically leaped through the door into the fighter bay as the alarms and flashing lights shut off. Confetti and balloons falling from the ceiling replaced the alarms and flashing lights. It had all been a false alarm to lure the Clydesdale to the fighter bay.
βHappy Birthday,β shouted most of the starship crew as they leaped out from various hiding places. Varickβs face drained of blood as he remembered he was just in his boxers. This situation felt like one of those anxious dreams, but it was real.
βUh, h-i-i-i,β the embarrassed Clydesdale managed to stammer out. The one time he wasnβt wearing an outfit, he could quickly change, and this happens. Tay hugged Varickβs waist as the horse put Layla down.
βWere you surprised, Var,β the kobold excitedly asked. βI set the whole thing myself with the captainβs permission.β Varick was touched that his boyfriend had taken the time to set up a surprise party for him. Although the Clydesdale tailor wished he had time to prepare himself for the party better and wasnβt in his boxers.
βYes, I was quite surprised,β Varick admitted hugging Tay back. βWith everything going on, I forgot my birthday.β Gifts had been sent in from the mahogany horseβs friend and family back home. A special birthday cake made by Varickβs mom was carefully brought to the starship by Tay. A bartender was on hand to provide all the apple daiquiris the blonde horse could drink, which in this situation was quite a few. Throughout the party, Varick caught several people staring at him in his boxers. They could stare all they wanted. He knew that he looked good in anything. Layla needed corralling away from anything edible as the volai tried to eat any unattended food.
βIβve got a special gift for you, but itβll have to wait until we get back to our room,β Tay teased Varick tugging lightly at the horseβs boxers. βTrust me, Var. Youβre going to want to unwrap this one in private. Maybe with your teeth.β Varick had overcome his embarrassment of being in his boxers, but that statement turned his face bright red. The horse snuck away from the party with Tay at a convenient time. This party was the most thoughtful thing any of his lovers had ever done for Varick. Better timing could have saved the tailor a bit of embarrassment, but sweet nonetheless.
