Cast of Characters

VARICK: a twenty-three-year-old mahogany and brown husky standing around six foot one. He is an experienced tailor with a specialty in applying enchantments and glamors to the clothing he makes. While the horse has feminine features, he is still unmistakably male. He is a lifelong platonic friend with BRIDGETTE.

BRIDGETTE: a twenty-fourfour-year-old white wolf standing around five foot five. Her right hand was replaced with a silver metal magitech prosthetic after a childhood accident. A bit of a tomboy, the wolf likes to dress for utility more than fashion. She is currently questioning her platonic friendship with VARICK.

Act 1

Scene 1

Setting: We are in VARICK's apartment in Drakethorpe. A small kitchenette sits at stage left of the left entry door. There are a beaten-up couch and chair at stage right, with a small workstation set up at center stage. The workstation has a table, rolls of fabric, a chair, and a sketchbook on the table.

At Rise: VARICK is working on the sketch of an outfit at his workstation. The Clydesdale is diligently working when there is a knock on the door.

VARICK

(Looks to the door and in a casual voice)

Come in. It's unlocked

BRIDGETTE

(Opens the door as she enters the apartment before closing it behind her)

Hey VARICK, we need to talk.

VARICK

(keeps working on his sketch as he replies)

What kind of talk? Where do you want me to buy you lunch, talk, or do something more serious?

BRIDGETTE

(crosses the room and pulls the pencil out of VARICK's hand)

More of the "what are we" kind of talk. You've kissed me twice in the last month, and it's got me questioning our friendship.

VARICK

(mildly annoyed that his pencil was taken like that but shocked by the conversation topic.)

I guess I lost myself in those moments, but let's not forget you kissed me back. You told me not to do it again, and I intend to honor that.

BRIDGETTE

(sighs and flops down in VARICK's chair beside the couch)

There lies my question, though. Do you want to stop, or is there something you're not telling me? I would like to believe my best friend would be honest with me.

VARICK

(stands and walks over to sit on the couch)

We tried that once, well, twice, and it was awkward and weird. That kiss on Lyra was because I was just overcome with the beauty of the place after surviving the crash and that fight. After that incident at the musical, you were the one who came to comfort me, so I felt something more than friendship at that moment, and my body reacted before my brain did.

BRIDGETTE

(cautiously)

So you aren't holding any secret flames for me or anything?

VARICK

(firmly)

If we were meant to be together, it would've happened already. I'm not holding a secret flame for you.

BRIDGETTE

(relieved but mildly disappointed)

Good, because Quinn asked me out.

VARICK

(surprised)

Wait, Quinn, your drummer? I thought you weren't into girls.

BRIDGETTE

(as she stands up to leave)

I'm trying new things now

VARICK

(shows BRIDGETTE to the door)

Well, I wish you two the best of luck. Tell Quinn that if she breaks your heart, I'll sew her into tight clothes that can't move.

(BRIDGETTE and VARICK share a laugh as the scene ends.)
