Style Quest: Nurse

Chapter 14: Nurse

Varick and Kaytlyn’s parents decided to close their clothing shop for a week so that they could take a trip for their anniversary. Since he had an apartment, Varick agreed to have his sister stay with him for the week. The first day of the sleepover was great. Together the two played games and hung out late into the night. Kaytlyn was so excited to spend the whole week with her older brother. An excitement that would, unfortunately, die the following day when the twelve-year-old fennec woke up with the flu.

Unfortunately, this was not something Varick had the training to handle. The horse was a tailor, not a doctor. In his panic, he didn’t know what to do and froze. A fit of coughs from his sister broke his frozen shock. Quickly he reinforced Kaytlyn’s bed on the couch with extra blankets to help with her chills. He borrowed a bucket from one of his neighbors just in case. Once that was in place, the horse scribbled a note down on paper. Through an open window, Varick whistled three notes to summon one of the raven messengers of Drakethorpe.

β€œPlease, find a doctor for me,” Varick requested of the raven while holding the note in one hand and a silver thimble in the other. The ebony raven croaked before plucking up the thimble in its beak and the letter in its talon. As it flew away, the horse closed the window and turned his attention back to his ill sister. He supplied her with plenty of water and some canned soup he found in the cabinet. About an hour later, a knock sounded on the door. Varick answered to find a purple-eyed lioness dressed in red, yellow, and orange robes of harvest druids.

β€œHello, I’m Archdruid Violet, and I got your raven,” the lioness introduced herself as an awestruck Varick let her in. β€œWhere is the patient?” The blonde Clydesdale showed the archdruid to the couch where Kaytlyn had just finished vomiting into her bucket.

β€œYou’re so pretty,” the small fennec whispered as Violet knelt beside her. The archdruid placed her hand on Kaytlyn’s forehead, looked down her throat, and up her nose. Violet ground a few ingredients from her belt pouch before grinding them into a fine powder that she dumps into a glass of water. Kaytlyn is told to drink the mixture and does a bidden.

β€œShe’ll sleep after finishing that, but by tomorrow, she should be up and moving again,” Violet informs Varick as she repacks her pouches.

β€œThank you for your help. I didn’t think I’d get the archdruid herself,” Varick thanked the lioness for her aid. He was still in disbelief that one of the legendary heroes from the war was in his apartment. β€œHow much do I owe for your services?”

β€œNo charge, we druids believe in aiding those in need,” Violet waved off the coins Varick had started pulling out of his coin purse. β€œBut do me a favor and stop over-tipping the ravens. If they get too used to getting silver objects to deliver a letter, they’ll become impossible to manage.” Varick thanked the archdruid again as she left. Moments later, Kaytlyn began to snore on the couch. With that crisis managed, Varick hoped to fill the rest of the week with fun instead of sick days for his sister.
