Adventures in Interning: Brother Sister Rivalry

Chapter 5: Brother Sister Rivalry

Kaytlyn looked all over Drakethorpe for her brother, Varick. Eventually, she found him practicing kicks on a training dummy in a training arena. This place was exactly where the fennec needed him. As she straightened out her orange and red dress, Kaytlyn quickly approached the blonde Clydesdale.

“Varick! Fight me,” the small fox called to her brother. Varick turned to see his sister trying to do a fighting pose she saw in a movie.

“What? I have several feet on you and Mom would kill me if I hit you,” the brown horse laughed at the challenge. Angered by his decision not to take her seriously, Kaytyln gathered all her might and punched. The horse tailor quickly blocked the attacks, lightly tapping the fennec on the forehead with a chuckle. Infuriated by this, Kaytlyn tried several more attacks that failed to connect. “You good or do you want to keep this up?”

With a growl, Kaytlyn tapped into her druid powers to summon thorned vines from the ground to strike Varick. As he dodged backward, the Clydesdale threw out several needles that lit the plants aflame with blue and purple fire. A mushroom appeared underfoot at the right moment, causing Varick to slip and fall. Forced into a recovery roll, the equine tailor took a scrape from a rapidly growing thorn bush.

“You going actually to fight me now,” Kaytlyn taunted as more plants grew around the arena. With a growl, Varick threw out more needles to burn plants and launched himself at his sister. He wasn’t sure what was going on with her today, but he wasn’t about to lose to her in a fight. The punch connected with the pink metal of the mech armor as it formed around the fennec. Blue lights across F3NN3C P1NK lit up as the lenses in the helmet started feeding Kaytlyn battlefield data.

“So this is what you were up,” Varick laughed as he took a few quick steps backward, shaking his hand. “Guess I can take the kid’s gloves off.” Several copies of himself appeared with a tap of one of the buttons on the blonde Clydesdale’s vest. Typically, it’s a nice trick, but Kaytlyn could see which ones were copies based on heat signatures. The fennec pretended to be confused, not wanting to give away that she knew where her brother was.

“Oh no if only there was some way to tell which of you was real,” Kaytlyn pretended to lament as she purposely blasted several copies with her wrist guns. Earth energy tore through the clones, making them disappear as she approached the one with the proper heat reading. A foot shot out from behind and tripped mech suit.

“Did you not think I could disguise my heat signature,” one of the supposed copies of the horse smirked as he loomed over her with his hand out. “Lets end this nonsense and you can explain why you thought this was a good idea.” Kaytlyn reached up with the mech suit’s hand and firmly grasped the wrist of the offered hand. Quickly, she undid the hidden needle holder before throwing it away. Before Varick could react, the fox used the jump boosters in the mech legs to right herself.

“We aren’t done yet,” Kaytln yelled through the speakers on the suit as she pulled out the staff with the energy blade. Quick, clumsy slashes forced Varick into retreat as he threw needles from his one remaining hidden sheathe. All the projectiles bounced harmlessly off the energy shield of F3NN3C P1NK. One of the bladed staff attacks got lucky and clipped the buckle on the horse tailor’s needle sheathe, making it fall free. As Varick went to grab the scissors, an energy blast from the wrist blasters sent them flying.

“Fine. That’s how you want to play! That’s how we play,” the mahogany Clydesdale declared as he pulled a red thread from one of the spools on his arm-mounted talisman sewing kit. Tearing the string with his teeth, Varick wrapped his fists in the spell thread. Kaytlyn was not a fighter and was unprepared for the rapid flurry of flaming punches that came. While the energy shield on F3NN3C P1NK absorbed most of the damage, it quickly overloaded and shut down. One final hit sent the mech armor into a wall. Assuming that the fight had ended, Varick straightened himself and dusted some dirt off his clothes before going to help Kaytlyn. Franz, the penguin that was the armored fennec’s talisman, waddled by the equine and opened a secret panel on the pink mech suit’s leg. With a little wave, the bird stuck his wing into the panel.

“Legendary Kitsune mode activate,” Kaytlyn yelled through the suit speakers as her mech filled with a surge of energy. Picking herself out of the wall, the fox overcharged her weapons in preparation to fire. Kaytlyn’s one tail now appeared as nine as the illusion on her tail band activated. Rapid-fired overcharge blasts of earth magic caught Varick off guard. He tried to block them all with the mirror wards on his clothes but to no avail. Magical shots made their way through the shields, and soon, the tailor found himself tangled in a mess of flowers and vines.

“I yield,” Varick sighed reluctantly as F3NN3C P1NK stood over him. “But somebody needs to teach you to fight correctly. You could’ve had me beat sooner if your technique wasn’t terrible.

“Then teach me old wise one,” Kaytlyn laughed as the pink mech armor appeared to dissolve away.
