Adventures in Interning: Brick Time

Chapter 7: Brick Time

“So what weapon are you training with,” Kaytlyn inquired boyfriend Vondell. The black-furred skunk looked a little confused at the question.

“Are we even supposed to use weapons yet,” Vondell asked the fennec as he played with his currently rainbow-dyed striped tail. “I only just got pack bounded with my Mischief of Magpies. Is the Archdruid already giving you weapon training? I thought she was still mad about the mech armor.”

“Archdruid Violet isn’t exactly the one training me to fight,” the fox explained as she pulled several bricks from her purse to lay on the ground. First was a standard red clay brick, then a brick that appeared made of fire, one made of ice, and lastly, what seemed to be a vinyl inflatable brick all lined up on the ground. “I’ve got Brick Brick, Fire Brick, Ice Brick, and Air Brick, depending on the element needed for the fight.”

“Who is teaching you to fight with bricks and why,” Vondell questioned, totally confused by this choice of weaponry. “How much use is a brick in a fight?”

“Oh silly boy, bricks are the best weapons for fighting haters,” Kaytlyn smiled wide as she picked up Brick Brick. “They are easily concealable, work as a melee weapon, and come back if I throw them.” The fennec threw Brick Brick as far as she could to demonstrate this point and then waited. Moments later, her talisman cape penguin, Franz, came waddling up with the brick held high.

“Here you go ma’am,” Franz offered up Brick Brick to Kaytlyn before turning to Vondell. “Lovely seeing you again, young sir. Your magpies were just telling me the most wonderful jokes. Much friendlier than ravens.” With his job completed, the penguin ran to a nearby tree and climbed it, disappearing into the branches.

“See? They’re the perfect weapon,” the young fennec laughed as she hefted the brick weapon. She gripped it tightly and did a few practice swings menacing nearby air. “My brother is teaching me how to fight with them properly. Once I introduce you two, I’m sure he’ll also teach you. Then we can be a proper power couple.”

“I’m not sure the brick life is for me,” Von laughed as he watched his girlfriend play with her elemental weapon. “My teacher will probably teach me how to use a staff like him. Maybe I can get a special rune staff to use as my talisman. I still can’t believe that the Archdruid’s son is my trainer and you got the lioness herself.”

“It’s perfect! All of our training is at the same time, and our chores are together,” Kaytlyn happily exclaimed as she stowed her weapons. “We get to spend so much time together without parents looking over our shoulders and being weird.”

“We might want to tell them, though, so we can go on dates and hang out outside of the Grove,” the skunk boy suggested nervously, playing with his tail. “Although I’m a little nervous about them not liking you because they’ve been hinting at me pairing up with a boy from a rich family.”

“Don’t worry,” the fox girl assured her boyfriend with a hug. “They’ll love me and if they don’t, I’ve got bricks.”

“We’ll call that plan B,” Von laughed, embracing Kaytlyn.
