Suave's latent element is fire - and whilst it's definitely useful for a man in his kind of position, he's also not entirely acquainted with how best to use it. Whilst many use their elements freely of their own will, Suave requires a little help focusing and chanelling his element. Thankfully, his talisman, The Deck of Many Faces, provides the perfect way to employ his element, and make use of it in the field.
Whilst incapable of summoning fire by himself, Suave can make use of other sources of flame to set ablaze the cards of the deck. His preferred techniques often make use of the sandpaper strip on the deck's box to strike a match, or alternatively applying his habit of smoking to take a cigarette to a card of his choice. As the card burns away... it unleashes magics that he can employ to a great variety of effects!
...At least in theory. In practise, Suave isn't yet all that used to what he can do. Each card seems to have it's own effect, determined by a combination of both the user's intent and their personal interpretation of the cards and suit. In practise, so far Suave has been able to employ Spades as an offensive suit of sorts - firing off flaming missiles as demonstrated above - and his favourite suit Clubs as a means of manipulating smoke - often using it to cloud his exits and escapes as he remains on the run.
So far with Hearts and Diamonds... Suave has mostly only achieved accidentally setting himself on fire whilst experimenting with them.
Of course, the Deck of Many Faces isn't only limited to what cards one would find in a normal 52 card deck - and indeed, with it's seemingly endless variation of suits, it suggests endless possibilities on the horizon for someone who knows what they're doing. Unfortunately for Suave... well so far he's not so confident in what he can do - and it leaves doubt in his mind as to the affinity he has for his own element.
He's never going to be able to get the smell of burnt fur out of his nostrils.

Terrific piece, your style is so expressive ^-^
And yes, the number on the card does correlate to what they do! Lower numbers for spades is less missiles but bigger with slight curvature/homing - bigger numbers meanwhile give more projectiles but are smaller, and have to be directed!
Also thank you so so much, expressiveness is really important for me, and something I want to focus on more in future, so I'm glad you feel that way ;-;
This is also jsut hecking creative how the power manifests, just that entire theme of playing cards always carrying through
I was really eager whatever element I got to try and carry the theming forward - I didn't want the powers to feel to disparate from the core character concept, and thought this would be a neat way to do fire with them!
I was really worried that the Spades would lose their form a li'l through all the fire, so I'm glad they're still identifiable!
Thank you so much!
For realsies tho, this may be one of my fave pieces you've done - that shading looks brilliant! Especially the padded jacket for some reason. The burning cig and the fire effects just look amazing, and the low head tilt really adds to it all.
UGH this is SO COOL
The padded jacket wound up being the bit I spent most time shading on, really wanted to make sure it was clear that it wasn't just one smooth surface/texture.
