Ballad of Kyanoko: Going Camping p2

Chapter 7: Going Camping p2

Prompt 8 - Summer activities in Lyra

Word Count: 310

_____

β€œPlease tell me you at least know what s’mores are?” Ginger almost begged as she pulled out a bag of fat puffy marshmallows from her backpack. The warm glow of the fire created sparkles in the crystal dust around them. It was serene and picturesque. Something Kyanoko didn't think she would get tired of any time soon. And it was certainly a unique feeling for camping- even if it was still Summer.

β€œI haven’t made any since I was kid,” Kyanoko sighed from the nostalgia of late Summer nights in her village.

β€œIt’s time to change that,” the cat had already poked her own marshmallow through with a sharpened stick, burned at the end to sterilize it somewhat. She tossed the bag over to the tanuki, who nearly dropped the bag on the ground. Kyanoko was surprised at just how soft these marshmallows were.

Ginger broke open graham crackers and Kyanoko divided the chocolate. All they had to do was toast their mallows. Ginger held her stick a respectful distance away from the fire, gently rotating and carefully watching. Kyanoko did it the way she remembered being effective as a kid- shoving the thing into the belly of the flames.

Her marshmallow stick temporarily became a flaming spear as the sugary confection ignited almost immediately. Ginger raised her brows at the display but didn’t say anything. Kyanoko pulled her marshmallow from the fire, and blew out the makeshift sugar candle. The surface looked like a charred crocodile and she felt satisfied.

Kyanoko slid her torched marshmallow on top of a chocolate graham and made her first s’more in years. She bit into it and felt her tail wag from the nostalgic memories that took over. But her stomach immediately hurt. Completely different than how she remembered being able to shovel back twenty or more of these and still wanting more.
