Chapter 3: Sleepy evening suprise

A shrill ringing roused Swan Song from her sleep.

By Celestia, how much she hated that door bell!

Blinking the sleep away, she drowsily freed herself from underneath Chatter Cherry and leaned her unconscious friend carefully against the backrest of the couch so she wouldn't  disturb her sleep.

She then shuffled into the hallway and to the door while quietly groaning the entire way , as the door bell was rung another time, hurting her ears.

When she opened the door she was greeted by the bespectacled face of her elderly neighbor Mrs. Silver Shimmer.

Beside her the older unicorn was holding up a package with her magic.

„Oh, my apologies dear.“ she gasped while looking Swan Song over. “I didn’t mean to disturb your sleep. It’s just the postmare left a package for you with me earlier today.“

Postmare.. package...

Swan Song’s still half asleep mind needed a few seconds to make sense of the words being said to her.

„Oh.. okay. Thank you Mrs. Silver Shimmer“ she mumbled while rubbing her temple with her hoof.

Using her magic she accepted the package and levitated it inside.

Mrs. Silver Shimmer nodded with a smile.

„Of course ,dear. Stay safe, these are dangerous times. Oh, and greet your charming marefriend for me.“

„W-Will do. Thanks again.“

With that the elderly unicorn turned to walk back to the door on the other side of the hallway, while Swan Song closed the door.

Wait a minute...

Marefriend?

Oh, right.

Mrs.Silver Shimmer had seen her and Chatter Cherry coming home together today.

And the day before.

And the day before that.

Always giving them that knowing smile whenever their eyes met to exchange polite greetings.

Swan Song felt her face getting a bit warm before she shook her head and decided to take a look at the package she just received.

She was honestly a bit surprised, that the postmare was still working like usual with the whole earthquake situation happening.

The forces of evil worked hard but the canterlot postal office worked harder ,apparently.

The unicorn’s heart skipped a beat when she noticed the writing that said ‚Canterlot School of Magic‘ as well as a red wax seal on the brown packaging paper.

Wasting no time she ripped it off with her magic, freeing a book with a mystical blue book cover from the packaging as well as a letter, that was decorated with the same red wax seal that had been on the packaging.

Swan Song ran her hoof softly over the smooth book cover.

‚Book of Spells volume 1‘ was written in golden lettering on it.

A spell book?

She flipped through the pages.

Invisibility spell, igniting spell, transformation...

There where all kinds of magic incantations explained in this book she couldn’t even start to fully understand, but reading through the pages made her heart beat faster with excitement.

She wanted to try all of those!

Swan Song read page after page, her mind was absorbing all this foreign information like a sponge until there was nothing that seemed to matter in the world except this book.

Having completely lost track of time she was just standing in the hallway when the sound of something very light falling to the ground made her jump a bit.

It was the letter that had come with the package.

She had almost forgotten about it.

With all her will power she ripped her gaze away from the book and picked up the letter from the ground.

Opening it , she noticed that the writing on the parchment was in cursive with big flourishes added onto the letters.

Swan Song somehow had the feeling that whoever wrote this must have been very proud of his or her writing.

‚Dear Swan Song,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the Canterlot School of Magic.

Sadly because of the current situation, we were forced to delay the start of the new school year as you are probably aware that every hoof is needed during the crisis.

We still hope to see you at the school once the situation is under control again.

Until then we decided to send every new student a copy of the first years spell book so that you can perhaps get a first impression of what you will learn during your first year.

We will inform all students once the school officially opens it’s doors again.

Sincerely, Jade Caster, headmaster of the Canterlot School of Magic.‘

She got in?

She actually-

„Hmmm..what’s happening?“ asked the sleepy voice of Chatter Cherry coming from the living room.

Swan Song saw the earth pony blinking and rubbing her eyes sleepily while she shuffled into the hallway.

„Oh, sorry, did i wake you?“

„No..it just felt like you suddenly weren’t there anymore.“

Her eyes fell onto the letter and the book.

„Is...Is that a spell book?“

Swan Song nodded and let the book fall onto the dresser standing in the hallway, so that her friend could take a look.

The earthpony flipped through the pages still a bit dazed looking.

Her eyes filled with confusion.

„Where did you get this?“

Instead of answering, Swan Song just levitated the letter in front of Chatter Cherry’s face.

The earth pony eyes read over the lines slowly becoming wider and wider, the sleepiness disappearing from them.

A big smile made it’s way onto her face.

„By the princess!“

Chatter Cherry’s eyes sparkled.

„You got in! You’re going to be a mage! An actual mage!“

She pulled Swan Song into a hug.

„I’m so proud of you! We need to celebrate this!“

„With another nap?“ Swan Song asked noticing the bags under Chatter Cherry’s eyes.

„Oh, Celestia ,yes.“ the earth pony yawned:“ I’m still completely spent from everything that happened today. You’re coming too?“

Swan Song nodded and then followed her friend back to the living room couch, where they snuggled together and fell asleep very quickly in each others company.

The dark unicorn' s last thought was that she would read the entire book in it's entirety as soon as she could.
