The majority of Xander’s life was spent in an educational facility that housed dangerous creatures, like a zoo. He was found as a hatchling and brought to that place, so it’s mostly all he knew for a long time. It wasn’t a bad existence, but it did leave him without a lot of education as he was one of the dangerous animals meant for the dominant species of his world to learn about. Overall, it was just very dull and left him longing for something more.

His species was known to take on the appearance of what they preyed on. This usually meant the more human species. Having been raised in captivity, this stunted the use of shape-shifting ability, leading to all of his shifts to be heavily flawed. This would prove to be a huge problem after he broke out of the zoo.

He fears being recaptured and taken back more than anything, and absolutely hates and distrusts humans (and anything that looks like a human) as result of this. The fear led him to taking several risks to avoid them, one of which sending him into the Paperverse, which he sees as an amazing opportunity and blessing. The only issue with it, is that he is currently stuck in his human shift.
