Jethro's lighter is never far from him, having developed a terrible habbit for smoking, he found the Zippo at an antique shop. The Zippo brand has long since disappeared but the butane fueled lighter is as functional as ever, albeit much more beat up than it used to be. It features the Japanese flag from the World War II era, and the original owner had it engraved with the Japanese character for Zero. This was actually what influenced Jethro's call sign, and the tatoo he has one his left bicep, the character for zero, sporting a red circle background with a thick white border, reminiscent of the marking on Mitsubishi Zeros from the second great war. In the era of homogeneity in the current Earth, Jethro has the lighter and his tattoo in opposition of the state that has continually washed away the many cultures of Earth in favor of a sanitized version of humanity.
The Mitsubishi Zero's iconic appearance, along with the war flag was also seen during the era of Japanese rebellion brought about by the Scarlet Wind rebels, for many it was thought that there would be an Independent Japan; however, that was before the tsunami that nearly drowned the island nation completely. The largest event in the history of the Earth, leading to the conspiracy that the Coalition had a hand in it. Japan became a No Man's Land, it's citizens all considered lost, though the country survived and they slowly pick the pieces up of the Tokyo hypercity. To this day, those born in the ruined nation must go to China or Australia to be registered as citizens as there is no longer any Coalition involvement in Japan. So in a way they go their wish, and a finger on the monkey paw curls.
