Chapter 2: Leilani, The Favored

Silas’s favorite item is his katana. His only consistent friend and partner in crime. Through thick and thin, life and death, this sword has been with him through everything no matter the circumstance. With aged and hardened steel it was the only thing left of his father and his life before the streets engulfed him. Before his demon abilities, it was simply his weapon of choice, draped over his shoulder on missions and jobs. Inseparable, Silas wasn’t Silas without it. He’d even named it. ‘Her name is Leilani.’ He firmly says to his friend. ‘A lady of the people.’ Lani had gotten that boy out of nearly all trouble in his life. Run gone south? Lani. Deal falls through? Lani? Home alone and you hear a sound? Lani. A use for everything and never apart.

When death overtook his body Leilani was the last thing in his grasp. Though he hadn’t fought to the death and had merely been caught up in the crossfire he clutched to that sword as he took his last breath. In the aftermath of his demonic contract, it was the first thing he saw coming back into the world. It would lead as his guide now… as he now had to navigate through the hells of being reborn a demon slave. A bounty hunter for a cause bigger than himself. Even through frustration and anger at his situation, Leilani was there for him. During his first bounty encounter, someone had stolen her. Though his skills and newfound powers proved for their separation to be about as helpful as a rat trap loaded with cheese, it filled him with another level of rage that not even his demon contractor could account for. This kind of unadulterated rage over some materialistic possessions was concerning for someone like the demon contractor, who thought this man happened to not be fully insane. Nonetheless, Leilani was returned to him promptly after some slight disemboweling.

Silas was originally unaware of his beloved sword's new upgrades post-death; unknown to the power it held while in his hands. The first time he found out was a particularly hairy moment for him. His second bounty contract had been more difficult than anticipated. With his own powers still not entirely under lock and key yet, there seemed to be an extreme output of power that Silas could not handle well. Once again, Leilani comes to the rescue of the boy. All that extra, untempered demonic power funneled straight into the weapon's steel without his knowledge. This meant that the next time that kind of power was output from him he found the blade to be glowing… and if you looked even closer it almost looked as if the steel was moving. And while he started to get used to his power, he also got very good at dispersing his power output. The stronger he got, the stronger Leilani got. Now, not only were the pair inseparable, but unstoppable. That is why Leilani is Silas’s favorite item.
