Chapter 4: Violence

A/N:  Ok so I got lazy and didn’t want to edit.  But here I am with the third chap for you.  Enjoy.

Disclaimer:  I don’t own Inuyasha or any of the characters.  The story is strictly mine.  Do not plagerize.

With the rest of Inu-tachi

“Nani! What the fuck is going? WHRE DID KAGOME FUCKING GO? WHO THE HELL DID THIS? KAGOME, KAGOOOME, KAGGOOOOOOOMMMMEEEEE! Where in the seven hell are you Kagome? Kagome… where are you? I can’t lose you too… I can’t!” As expected the minute Kagome disappeared, along with Sesshomaru, Inuyasha started to rampage. He destroyed trees, yelled his head off, and like always, wouldn’t listen to reason. Miroku and Sango desperately tried to calm him down, but he wouldn’t hear any of it. He was, for lack of better phrase, a madman gone insane.  How did he accomplish that?  Who knows.

So now Miroku was trying to think of a way to get him to stop his little stress relieving system, while Sango and Kirara were desperately trying to calm down a bawling Shippo and Rin. Finally Miroku got an idea and went over to Kagome’s big yellow backpack and plucked out two lollipops and some rope. “Thank any deities listening that Kagome-sama thinks to bring everything in this oversized bag of her’s.”

So with the new items in his hands he walked over to where Shippo and Rin were and held out the lollipops. “Shippo, if I were to give you this lollipop, would you stop crying? Because I am sure if Kagome-sama were here she would not like to see you cry. Do you want me to tell her that you, her savior, was crying just because she was gone for a little while? And you Rin, would you want them to find out you were sad just because they went somewhere really quick? How about you go play with the dragon of yours while we wait for them, ok?” He watched her nod as he handed her the lollipop before wiping her tears, giving a big toothy smile, and running to go play with Ah and Uhn.

This seemed to have the desired affect on Shippo also because now he was just sniffling trying to keep the mucus, which had gathered during his tears, from falling.

‘I don’t want Kagome-okaa-san to know that I was crying. She might not trust me take care of her anymore. And I want to protect her because after my parents died, she was the only person who took care of me. She was the only person who didn’t pick on me, or treat me like a savage animal or something. She didn’t even care that I had tried to take her Shikon shards. She got herself in a life-or-death situation for me when I had done those things to her. So for her I have to be strong, for my Kagome-okaa-san I will be strong, and I will wait for Kagome to be brought back to us.’

“Ok Miroku, you’re right. Kagome-chan wouldn’t want to know her protector was crying. Um… can I still have the lollipop? You know since I was so understanding and all. I deserve it right? Please, can I please have it; I will be good I promise.”

He said this as he shuffled out of Sango’s embrace and stood on his tiptoes trying to reach for the oh so addictive candy in the monk’s hands. But the monk just pulled it up over his head and spoke to him again. If he was going to calm Inuyasha down he needed the kit’s help. “You can have this after you help, Shippo-san.”

‘Hey might as well ensure that he will help by flattering him.’

“Will you help me calm Inuyasha down so that we may find a way to get Kagome back from wherever she is?”

“Yeah sure, just give me the candy already!” Miroku couldn’t help but chuckle at the kid’s antics. He was jumping up and down to try to reach the very high up candy. But right now they had more pressing matters to attend to; Inuyasha was running out of trees to slaughter. So he bent over in the middle of Sango, Shippo, and Kirara and started to whisper his plan so that a certain pair of hanyou ears wouldn’t hear. When they had all agreed what each person’s part was they set off to bring down their very pissed hanyou friend.

Shippo went in front of the hanyou to stop his attack on one of the few trees left, successfully halting him. “Move brat, unless you want to be ripped into shreds like that tree will be in a few seconds.” But the kit wouldn’t budge an inch, and instead climbed up to one of the lower branches of the stubby tree, and sat down.

“You know Inuyasha, I really like sitting here so I won’t move. Just go and find another tree to chop down like the dog you are. Well more like, partially are.” That just made Inuyasha lose the little patience he was having with the kit, and Shippo knew it. He could hear Inuyasha growl out all his frustrations and he lifted his clawed hand to bring down on both the tree and the kit who dared insult him.

“Come on Inuyasha, you can’t really kill me. Because you and I both know that if you were to kill me and if, if, you ever find Kagome again she will hate you with all her heart for doing that to me. She will probably sit you like a hundred times then leave you because you killed me. You don’t want that do you Inuyasha? Inuyasha?” Shippo’s eyes widened more than he ever thought they possibly could and it didn’t seem like they had to go through with the rest of the plan. There he was staring at Inuyasha as he fell on his knees, head facing the ground, bangs covering his eyes, which were shedding tears. The only other time he had ever seen Inuyasha cry was when he thought Kagome was dead, but she really wasn’t. And here he was crying silently over Kagome, who was also the first person to ever except him for who he was.

“Why is it that I can never protect the ones I care for? Why do I always fail them, why can’t I keep the promises I make? Why?” This was said in an inaudible whisper, but with his youkai ears Shippo could hear what he said.

The rest of the group started to gather around the teary Hanyou, and sat down in a circle with Miroku in the middle, Sango next to Inuyasha, Shippo still in the tree, And Kirara placing her self in Inuyasha’s arms where he started to pet her absently, his bangs still covering his eyes.

“Well, now that we are all calm enough to speak and act with reason we must find a ways to find Kagome-sama. I was thinking about this for a while and I have decided that it would be best if we stay here for at least three days. Meaning we have to start taking care of ourselves since Kagome-sama isn’t here to do it for us. My Otou-san used to go to this world that he created in his own mind when he was stressed. And I believe that Kagome-sama and Sesshomaru-sama might have been taken to one of those mind areas for a reason. Then they will return here when everything is settled. I also know that when they get back they don’t know how much time has passed because time does not exist there, which is what makes it so peaceful.”

“Houshi-sama is right. We should stay here to make sure that she is in one of those mind places. Then when three days have passed, if she is not back yet we can go in search of her. And by then we will be calm enough to think straight, and think of what to do from there.”

Things were quiet for about a minute until you could hear the rustle of cloth, making everyone turn to their oddly silent friend. They watched as he walked off into the forest and at first were very confused. But then that confusion turned to anger in a snap when they saw where he was heading towards. They could feel the presence that was there from a mile away, in a manner of speaking. And then they saw it just to confirm their suspicions, a soul stealer, heading towards the same direction Inuyasha was going.

“That bastard! First he is over here crying and rampaging because Kagome is gone then he has the nerve to just up and go to Kikyou like it didn’t even matter. Then he always gets mad at Kagome-chan because Kouga declares his love for her. Ugh, I just want to kill him for his ignorance sometimes!”

“Yes, we all do, at times. But right now we have to fill our stomachs. Well, lets see… the only thing we have even a remote chance of preparing right is some ramen so lets give it a shot.”

--A few minutes later--

“Well, the ramen thing worked out worse than I expected it would, but we have to eat something.” The ramen was burnt, and it didn’t smell appetizing at all. They had over cooked the noodles and forgot to get the other seasoning packs to put in with the noodles. So all-in-all, it was a total failure. Now they had to make do with what they had and just move on.

--Mind World--

“Kagome-sama? Kagome-sama are you ok, are you hurt, is anything wrong? Please, tell me you are fine, tell me my baka of a son didn’t hurt you too seriously!”

The only thing you could hear from the now conscious girl were moans of pain. The acid was still in her system and she could feel it as it burnt through her body, through her veins, and so help her God, it hurt so badly! She just wanted to scream out in pain and see if it got rid of the horrible sensation she had at the moment. Oh how she wanted so much to just wither away into nothingness if it would just stop the pain. Obviously the STILL nameless okaa-san had no idea that her son had sent his acid into her blood system. But she was right, she had to fight it off. She wouldn’t let him die in a place like this; she won’t let herself die in a place like this either.

So with great effort and pain she pulled her self up into a sitting position but regretted it immediately. It was like her lying down was keeping the poison in a slower traveling motion, but with her sitting she could feel it just rush through her, and it hurt even more than before. Every few seconds she would wince as a sudden burst of pain would remind her that she always gets hurt when she helps others, whether it be physical or emotional depended on the person in question, but I think we all know what kind of pain she is in.

But if you were to ask her if she regretted saving the Taiyoukai, she would say no. Not once has she regretted helping another, no matter what they do to her afterward. That still didn’t change the fact that it hurt though.

But she forced herself to stand up anyway; she was not going to die from this. She had gone through much more than this and she wasn’t going to let a little acid ruin her streak of surviving. She had really died once before! She had stopped breathing and her heart had stopped, and it had also been because of poison. Well, this isn’t as much as she had endured then, and now that she thought about it, it had been Sesshomaru who had saved her! She never did get to thank him for that. So through the pain she walked over to him, still wincing every so often, but it was subsiding. She looked up so she could look into his eyes.

You would think that his eyes would remind her of Inuyasha’s, but they didn’t. Kagome knew what it felt like to be seen as nothing more than a copy, a replica of something similar yet so different from the other person. And she wanted to make sure that no one else had to go through that feeling, not like her. So she looked up into those amber golden eyes, and she noticed they were a softer shade than Inuyasha’s, as was his hair. But in a moment she was back to wincing.  Kagome attempted to maintain eye-contact, even through the pain. She opened her mouth to speak but it took her a while to find her voice and when she did find it, it sounded raspy.

“Sesshomaru-sama? Thank you, for saving my life back when one of the Shinnintai-tachi wanted to marry me. Even if you didn’t intend to save me, I am still forever grateful.”

“Kagome-sama… did he allow himself to let his acid flow through your veins?”

“It doesn’t matter, I owe him my life. So I can’t say anything to him. But, God does it ever hurt! I mean ouch, what did I do? All I did was ask if you wanted something and you go out and say those, things to me? Never mind, do you need anything now?” You could hear her wincing lightly. But she kept brushing it off, trying to ignore it and tend to her patient instead.  Try to anyway, and it was working too! She noticed everyone was giving her a strange look, and she just couldn’t help but sigh and roll her eyes “Well, anyway, how about we all start over again? Hello! My name is Higurashi Kagome… and what is your name? I know you are Midoriko, and you are obviously Sesshoumaru-sama, but you have yet to grace me with your name my Lady.”

Finally after years of silence from the others one of them spoke, but she didn’t expect for it to be Sesshomaru. “Her name is Mitsuki, and she is this Sesshomaru’s hahaue-san. But the question is not that, but what she is doing here and where is here.” When he said it, it sounded more like a statement than anything else.

“Oh! Right you were both going to answer my questions right? Well I think I want to know now! Ok, where are we?” The two women smiled a true smile at how she could get happy over the slightest things, but quickly turned serious again.

“You are in a sort of mind realm. Your mind created it because you were stressed and your mind needed to escape from all of it. So it created a place apart from the world that only you can visit. Now you can come here anytime you want to relax. But there are exceptions; only the strongest of people can be brought with you if you are thinking of them with concern or any other pure emotion. This, by the way, is the reason why Sesshoumaru is here. Now, tell me, when you awoke from your slumber did you feel free?” (Mitsuki)

“Yes, I did, and it felt wonderful. For the first time in my life I felt truly happy, and I still kind of do right now, just not really. I guess when I saw Sesshoumaru-sama over there just lying in his blood it kind of brought me back to my sense of duty. Oh well, at least I felt happy for a bit ne? Now why are we here with you? I am sure that it isn’t just to tell me that this is my mind realm or something.”

“You, my dear, are far more intelligent than anyone believes. Yes, you are correct we are here for other purposes. And since Sesshoumaru-sama is here he can listen in and ask questions if he wishes to do so. But the true reason you are here talking to us is because you have a very important destiny, and your life and strength are an essential thing to complete this destiny. But it also requires a pure soul, which you already possess, meaning the training will be mitigated drastically. We can not tell you your destiny for fear that it will change the outcome of the worlds carefully calculated fate. But we may tell you that it requires the death of someone ten fold stronger than Naraku, who you must also dispose of.” (Midoriko)

“I see, but why me? I am sure that there are many people out there who could surely take my place, aren’t there? I am no one special, merely the reincarnation of a powerful miko. So why not one of the other people out there to be sent to do this? Why are duties always placed on me, why do I always have to sacrifice? Eep, did that just come out of my mouth? How could I say something like that! What is wrong with me, when did I become so selfish and sadistic?”

She was talking more to herself than she was to anyone towards the end, and it was funny how she looked when she was scolding herself. She was just so selfless and innocent, that they couldn’t help but burst into a fit of giggles and collapsed into each other to keep from falling. They had never done that on a serious mission or any other time for that matter, but it seemed Kagome’s personality would have none of that.

Sesshoumaru on the other hand was still a little shocked at how his mother had been so protective of the ningen he had tried kill. But he was mostly shocked, although it didn’t show, that the same ningen had really been concerned for his well-being. So he settled for not talking and just listening to how the conversation turned out, which he preferred to do anyway. He wasn’t one for talking, he liked to listen and take everything in instead, which is why he made such a good Taiyoukai. So he went back to listening to whatever was going on between the two women and the woman-child. It seemed that the two older women were laughing at the now pouting, playful, woman-child.
“Another question, why couldn’t I sense you Mitsuki? I sensed Sesshoumaru and Midoriko, but I never sensed you.”

“Oh that is because Sesshomaru’s and my aura are one in the same. So there was no possible way that you could sense Sesshoumaru and my self separately.” Then they started to laugh their heads off again, which was starting to get contagious because Kagome was having a difficult time staying serious.

“Hey, it isn’t nice to laugh at someone who is right in front of you, you know. But like I was saying, aren’t there other people who could complete this? I mean I am only a reincarnation of the past Shikon protector, Kikyou, so what would be so special about me? Nothing, that is what is special, nothing at all.” By the time she finished talking the other two had calmed down and stopped laughing and were now as serious as Kagome and Sesshoumaru. They both looked at each other as if reaching a mutual agreement of some sort and looked back to where Kagome stood and went closer to her as if they were about to reveal some big secret.

“Listen Kagome-sama, you are much more than you believe you are. Not only are you not Kikyou’s reincarnation, but you are much more than you make everyone believe. You are Midoriko and my own reincarnation which gives you both advantages for each species. You can show your emotions as easily as a human can, but can control them. You can age as quickly as humans; until you are at the age of 18, then you age like a youkai until you are 20, at which you stop aging all together, meaning you outlive your friends.”

“But like all powerful youkai you can not die unless truly killed. This is your sacrifice as well as the fact that you can no longer hop between times, for we must seal the well. It can only cause problems to keep hopping through times; you must understand Kagome-sama that all Gods must give something up for those they protect.”  She paused for a moment letting what she said sink in.

”That is right Kagome-sama, you are a Kami, and you must fulfill your duty as one. Now we have no more time for talking, come back to this realm in two weeks time. And Sesshoumaru, you also play a part in this, so you must stay by her side from now on. You must come back with her in two weeks, but during that time you are to train her, do you understand musuko-san? You must do this as your duty towards your lands, and people.”

“Yes, hahaue-san, I understand, but why not my half-brother, whom she trusts?”

“Do you really believe Inuyasha-san has that much swordsmanship? If so you don’t seem to think that aloud.”

“Then, I will do this hahaue-san, for my lands, people, and you.”

“Thank you, musuko-san, this will be on my list of things to repay you for.” And with that the two women disappeared into nothingness leaving the two other people to find a way to leave Kagome’s world. Sesshoumaru just stood there looking at his new, and really first, apprentice. She was just standing there staring at the place the two women had just been at with an unreadable expression, which was odd because usually you could read her like a book. She seemed to be staring at something that wasn’t there and was still as a statue until she abruptly moved, some what mechanically, and waved her hand in front of her, still looking at the something that was nothing.

And all of a sudden the world before them started to waver and was becoming mixed with the real world, the one that was not peaceful like this one was. Even through all the commotion, it had given him a sense of peace, most likely because he was by a God. ‘Ha, who would have ever thought that such a small girl could be such a great being. Yet that would explain why she cared for me, and all the others she has cared for. And now this Sesshoumaru must train her for the sake of the world. Much easier said than done. One who is thrown into something that they do not wish to do does not learn easily, for they wish to stall the inevitable.’

He watched as the two worlds battled for dominance until the real world started to win over the Mind realm. And he saw the still very expressionless girl still staring at nothing, seemingly lost in a blank state of mind. Finally all that remained was the real world and how he desperately wanted to go back to the mind realm. Everything there was pure and nothing was destroyed where as here everywhere you look there is tree bark on the ground and tree stumps all over, most likely caused by his half-brother. He looked around and saw the Miko-God just standing there staring at her friends still with that unreadable expression on her face. Then she turned around to look at him with unreadable eyes and motioned for him to follow her, which he did so. He had this urge inside him not to give her a hard time, maybe because he knew she would have a hard time convincing her comrades?

Well it didn’t matter because they were walking towards the campfire, it seemed that more time had passed here than it did in the Mind realm; in fact there it seemed to not move from noon. He could see that they had grabbed the attention of the others in the group. He watched as they quickly reached for their weapons, but the now very perfunctory Kami just raised her hands and shook her head no, silently telling them ‘no, don’t attack him anymore.’ He saw them hesitate, but oddly they listened to her, as if they would never doubt her word.

They moved closer to the group and he could see that his half-brother was not there with them. He briefly wondered where he could be but quickly brushed it off as not important to him. He looked over the surrounding area as they were now in front of the fire and saw Rin lying next to the Miko-God’s kit and the neko-youkai was curled around them in her bigger form while they slept. You could tell the two comrades that were there wanted to run over to their companion and hug her but refrained from doing so while he was around, he could tell they weren’t about to put their guard down while he was there.

Kagome, during this entire time was replaying what she just found out in her head. ‘I am going to outlive everyone I hold dear, I am not going to be able to see my family for 500 years, and I won’t be able to be free like I want. I will never be free of obligation, of duty.’ She kept repeating that in her mind as she involuntarily made her way to her backpack and bent down on her knees and picked through the contents looking for her sleeping bag and she felt eyes on her, but she didn’t care right now.

Finally the reality of it all began to sink in, and her hands slowed down until they were still, as if frozen in place. ‘I will outlive all my friends, I won’t see my family for 500 years, and not once during that time will be free. I will out live my friends, meaning I will have to live without Sango, Miroku, maybe even Shippo, Inuyasha, and Kirara. I will out live my family, but that is after I wait 500 years to see them again. And not once will I be free to enjoy life, to see the beauty of the world.’

She let her body fall to the ground and she landed on her butt with her knees tucked to her side. She sat there for a second letting it settle inside her mind. And when it did she wanted to cry, she would be lonely for the rest of her life, which was eternal. That was her sacrifice, eternal loneliness, and yet they expected her to be happy about this? How could they… but then she couldn’t blame them, it was her destiny. And if she was going to be lonely then she was going to make the most of her time with friends. She turned to look at them with her now very sad eyes, and then bustled onto her feet to begin her chores anew. She knew they would want her to do that, and like she thought they didn’t protest when she started to gather all the dirty plates and pans to go find a stream to wash them in. She walked to the edge of the clearing then, as if suddenly realizing something, abruptly stopped and turned to look at them. “Um… where’s Inuyasha?” She saw them suddenly look troubled, “What’s wrong?”

“Um… Kagome-sama, ever since you disappeared 3 days ago, every night Inuyasha would go to see… Kikyou…” He trailed off not knowing what to say to the girl who was obviously already distraught.

“I’m sorry I asked. I really am.” And she turned to leave and finish up her chores so she could get some rest. Some rest she really wanted at the moment. She could take a bath tomorrow, today she just needed to lay back and let her mind think over everything that she has learned. When she got back to the campsite Inuyasha was back and arguing with his brother, how in turn was as impassive as ever. But it was like some deity was finally on her side and Inuyasha didn’t even try to reach for the Tessagia. She walked out into the clearing and saw Inuyasha turn his venomous eyes on her, and before she knew what was going on he had her pinned to one of the few trees that were left surrounding the clearing. His claws were digging into her shoulders, and for some reason it brought not only new pain and blood, but also the blood and pain from the other wound inflicted on her earlier by Sesshoumaru’s hand.

She could feel his claws dig deeper into her skin tearing a few veins underneath her skin. What was with Inu-youkai today and sinking their claws into her? Was it like national ‘Tear Kagome Apart’ day or something? And man did it hurt, but over all the pain she could hear her other tomadachi yell at Inuyasha to stop what he was doing to her. Then she could feel Inuyasha’s breathe on her neck and she opened her eyes barely realizing that she had, had them closed. There was Inuyasha’s face right by her ear, and she could hear his irrational breathing as he tried to calm down but it only ended up with his claws going deeper into her skin tearing more veins, and the acid seemed to have awoken from some sort of slumber because she could feel it spread through her.

Finally she could hear Inuyasha speaking into her ears in a raspy voice and she opened her eyes painfully to look straight ahead where she could see a now awake Shippo and Rin crying out to Inuyasha to stop hurting her. While Sango and Miroku were also yelling their heads off at Inuyasha. But then it was all washed away when she heard Inuyasha, “Who do you think you are inviting him into the group? What the hell were you thinking doing that, and who gave you permission to even speak to him?”

And even through the searing pain she could feel her powers try to rise up to defend herself like they always did. She didn’t want to hurt Inuyasha but it was the only way to get him off her. So she gathered up a little of her power and put her hands on his stomach and let it loose. He was sent flying back at least 10 feet and she could see him get up again as she slid down the bark. He tried to run back to her but before he could get within 5 feet of her she yelled, “SIT!” and she watched as he successfully went flying to the ground uttering his usual string of curses.
And even through the searing pain she could feel her powers try to rise up to defend herself like they always did. She didn’t want to hurt Inuyasha but it was the only way to get him off her. He tried to run back to her but before he could get within 5 feet of her she yelled, “SIT!” and she watched as he successfully went flying to the ground uttering his usual string of curses.

She could feel the acid burning her as she bleed from both of her wounds now. The ones on her shoulder and arms and the ones on her neck. She closed her eyes to try and forget about the pain but it was ever present, ‘The mind realm is for stressing relieving, ne? So it must have been relieving me of my pain too. It makes sense doesn’t it? Pain is stress, stress is pain, and in my mind it is all gone. Damn that hurts like hell but what is there to do other than wait it out?’ So she did just that, waited for the pain to subside, and about two minutes later she regretted it because it only got worse.

It was so painful; she could feel her heart hammering inside her chest, as if it too were trying to escape the pain. She opened her eyes and saw everyone was staring at her with concern and fear in their eyes, except Sesshomaru, and even Inuyasha had the look in his eyes. ‘How could he dare to be scared and concerned after he hurt me? But like always I can feel myself forgiving him. Why can’t I ever stay mad at someone…
‘Pure soul’ ne? God, ne? I guess that would all make sense wouldn’t it? I have to get away form here right now though… I can’t stay here right now. Even if it hurts I have to run to at least try and escape the reality of it all. I have to get away from it, not matter how much it hurts physically, mentally, and emotionally.’

And so she got on her feet, breathing and bleeding heavily, and looked at her friends before she turned and started to run into the forest. She could hear them run after her and call out to her. But right now she had to try and escape her destiny, even though she knew deep down inside, that she was try to outrun something that wasn’t there. She was trying to escape an inescapable destiny.

She didn’t know how long she ran, but before she knew it, she had outrun her tomadachi, or they had given up, she didn’t know which. She could feel the acid finally take its toll on her, as did the blood loss. She was panting heavily, and she was sure that they could hear it back at the camp. Then out of nowhere she saw a shimmer as she ran into a wall, an invisible wall. That is why they couldn’t follow her anymore; she had walked straight into a barrier! But whose was it? And what did they want? It wouldn’t take long for her questions to be answered because when she fell on her back, both from the force of the impact and her weariness, she looked up and could see two pairs of eyes on her, and she knew exactly who they belonged to…
