Inescapable Destinies
Chapter Two
Beauty and Peace?

He sat still as he watched his charge run around chasing his most loyal servant. He heard the scared and annoyed squawks of the imp and couldn’t help but feel annoyed, the imp was always trying to look so strong in his eyes and here he was, frightened of a mere child, human nonetheless.

‘Foolish imp, this Sesshoumaru would never give you the recognition you so desire. This Sesshoumaru does not give his respect away to servants, especially those as unworthy as you. You are lucky I allow you to stay at my palace, with your incessant talking and squeaking. It almost gives this Sesshoumaru a headache to hear.’

He sighed inwardly, today had not been his day. He was rather cranky about it too, first his guards had allowed Rin to awaken him, then the toad accidentally set fire to all his paperwork for the day, and now he had to deal with this. Oh, what he would give to just slit the pest’s throat, but he Sesshoumaru did not let himself be controlled by such things. Not to say the toad did not get a just punishment… he rather enjoyed that much of the day, but he did not let his emotions control him. So he settled for just putting his hand up to his face as if to wipe the day’s problems away with that single movement.

But, just as was anticipated, the problems were still there, so he just forgot about it and settled down to watch his charge. ‘Rin, although she is just a human child, I can not seem to hate her as I do the rest. This Sesshoumaru does not stoop as to lie to himself or another for that matter, but how I wish that I could merely forget about this human child. It is not correct for this Sesshoumaru, Taiyoukai of the West, to take in a human child. To protect her with the fury with I which I do. I should rid my self of her………’

But as he watched her run after Jaken, torturing him in the most innocent of matters, he just could not let himself do it. Was she not the one who tried to heal him for nothing in return? Was she not the one who loved him unconditionally? Was she not there at his beck and call like any servant, but yet was not such? How could he bring himself to do so, to rid himself of her, when she herself had not rid herself of the emotionless and cold Taiyoukai of the West as of yet? She deserved for him to care for her if after all this time she has yet to lose that happy look upon her face.

So lost was he in his thoughts of one happy little girl that he did not notice the sudden aura of a horde of Naraku’s puppets contiguous to them. There were about 20 of them and they were closing in fast on their location. Sesshoumaru was barely able to smell them when it was too late; they were only about 100 feet from where they stood now. He growled out at his stupidity and quickly said in his calm indifferent voice, “Rin, Jaken. Go hide behind something, as far as you can get.”

He watched as they ran off while he jumped down from the tree he was in, and just a split second later the puppets arrived surrounding him. He inwardly cursed himself for being so foolish as to put his guard down, now even Rin was in line of attack, he could see she had hid in some bushes not 20 feet away from where he stood. Again he cursed himself for his stupidity. But he managed to put it behind him for now and coolly regarded one of the puppets.

“Why do you bother this Sesshoumaru, Naraku? The least you could do is face me yourself and not hid behind your little toys. What do you want, for I will surely not fall into your manipulations again.”

“Kukuku, what do we have here?  You seem to be rather angered at the moment Sesshoumaru-sama.”

Sesshoumaru inwardly seethed at the way he said his title, but showed not outward reaction. He just stood there contemplating what to do about this situation; he could smell there was something different about these puppets. They seemed almost stronger, and that could mean nothing but trouble for him, because at the moment Rin was still in harms way. He would not be able to concentrate fully on the battle while trying to watch out for any stray puppets going after her.

But he had no more time to think when the puppets suddenly started sending their tentacles at him. He barely dodged one set when all of a sudden there was another reaching out for him. He inwardly growled, ‘Damn, they are stronger and faster even. There are far too many for even this Sesshoumaru to handle! I am merely on the defensive. DAMN!’

He was trying his hardest to remain calm on the outside when all of a sudden he felt a sharp pain at his side. He instinctively clutched his side to futilely try to stop the blood flow. He continued to dodge all the attacks until he was covered in injuries and the poison was starting to slow him down drastically.

“Well, I have seen all I need for today. It seems I have finally out done you Sesshomaru-sama. Kukuku, and just your luck, for it seems that Inuyasha and his little friends are going to be arriving soon. Farwell, Sesshoumaru-sama, for we may not have the chance to meet again…”

And with that all the puppets left the injured Sesshoumaru to face his indignation. To face his brother while he was injured, that was even worse than Naraku and his cowardly methods.

“Rin, do not move from where you are.” He demanded as he tried to regain his footing before his half-brother got there. But he was losing too much blood and was far too tired to actually accomplish said feat.

“H-hai, S-sesshoumarusama.” Rin was about to go check on her Sesshoumaru-sama when he told her to stay where she was at. And being the obedient girl she always was and is she did as he said, although hesitantly.

At that same moment Inuyasha and his group had arrived. It did not take a intelligence or even half a mind to notice that his brother immediately got into a battle-ready stance. His comrades following suit shortly after him, then his half-brother had the ignorance to laugh at him! The Sesshoumaru, Taiyoukai of the West! How dare he?! But not one second later he saw Inuyasha walk next to him after another attempt at standing. He had no intention of looking up to him.  Sesshoumaru heard Inuyasha say something but he was far too enraged to hear.  No, today was not his day at all. Everything was wrong today; perhaps some deity was cursing him for something he has done.

But no matter, right then the girl that follows the Hanyou around was running up to them, without a weapon. ‘What does she plan to accomplish without a weapon? Surely she does not intend to try and kill this Sesshoumaru with her bare hands, does she? That is simply preposterous! Or perhaps she is coming to join the Hanyou in mocking my ordeal, and then insist that he kill me.’ But he wasn’t expecting what she said next.

“INUYASHA! What are doing? Don’t you have any honor or morals? Well I do, and I won’t just sit by idly as you kill an already injured person! So put away your Tessagia before I make you feel just how annoyed I am!”

Although he had been able to retain his calm impassive façade throughout this entire ordeal, when she said that his eyes widened, just the slightest movement, but it was there. He also enjoyed the way Inuyasha went face first into the ground for some unknown reason.

Again he turned his attention back to the girl who was trying to save him. He mentally scoffed at the thought; imagine Sesshoumaru-sama rescued by a human wench. He could almost laugh at the idea… almost. But that is when he noticed her weariness, a weariness that a human only got from lack of food or sleep or both. Did the Hanyou not treat her well? Or did she simply refuse to do those things human require most?

He watched as she walked over to where Rin was and called out her, like they knew each other since the beginning of Rin’s life. Then he was even more amazed when Rin flung herself at her for comfort! She only did that with him, and that was because she trusted him. How and why did she trust Inuyasha’s wench? ‘The girl seems to be as weary as I am at the moment. Yet she stills forces herself into consciousness to make sure they give her their word……not to…harm this Sesshoumaru…’

He watched as the girl fell to the floor like himself, and a white, pink, and blue light enveloped the girl as well as himself.  Sesshoumaru suddenly felt warm all over. He didn’t know what was happening but before he could touch the ground he was lulled into a very peaceful sleep. In fact it didn’t even feel like he hit the floor…

_______________________________________________

The warmth she had felt just a second ago was gone as she felt herself gently be lowered to the ground. She didn’t want to wake up or open her eyes; she wanted to feel the beautiful grass underneath her as she rested, for the first time in days. She could feel the air around her gently caress her skin. It kind of made her think of feathers floating across the sky, brushing past her skin on their ever going flight to nowhere. For the first time in a long time she felt at peace. She felt happy, and she knew that this time there would be no Inuyasha to interrupt it, no daily chores to do or to pick up. She didn’t know how she knew, but she did.

She listened to the wondrous songs of the birds everywhere. She could hear the wind and grass swaying with each other, as if in a beautiful melodic dance. She could hear the wind whisper sweet nothings to her, as if persuading her to see the beauty at her feet. As if telling her to come play with it in this peaceful world.

She just lay there with her eyes closed off to any, as she finally got to bask in the sun, the world, the splendor of life. She could hear it, she could feel it, but now she was ready to see it as well. She opened her eyes slowly so as not to be blinded by the sudden light and she stared in awe at the magnificence surrounding her being.  Kagome almost wanted to cry, because of the beauty that she couldn’t believe was actually there.

She found herself taking in her surroundings. She was in a clearing of sorts. It was more of a meadow of flowers; Kagome sat up to get a better view. When she looked around her she could see a small creek winding its way through the middle of the field, all the way to the other side, where it ended at a beautiful small pond with a small noiseless waterfall. She looked at the surrounding trees and found them to be Sakura trees with the petals filtering the air, ‘Hey… I thought I felt something against my skin...’

She saw the many types of flowers around her. They looked like they had been arranged for her because they were all her favorites.

She stood up from where she was sitting on the floor to make her view a bit better. The sun was not too heavy on her; it seemed to have weighed itself down just to the most comforting level. As she stood there again in awe she watched as if it were her favorite show. She gazed quietly as the Sakura petals danced around her and the suns’ rays glistened on them lightly, giving them an ethereal glow.

In fact the entire place seemed ethereal; it just was so unbelievably beautiful that she thought it was too good to be true.  She looked around and finally acknowledged two other presences. She looked around and spotted one of them.  There, lying on the ground in a pool of his own blood, lay Sesshoumaru.
