Chapter 3: Learning Fire Shield

The elf looked at his Yeen student. They were very similar in height but he was lean while Danovan had gained some body fat since they started. Solfis addressed his pupil, "Today we will be working on the fire shield. To do it properly we'll need a sky mage, so I've invited a guest to join us."

Dan focused on the words of his blue eyed tutor. A combination sky and fire defensive spell, this was something new for him having only ever practiced attack or utility fire magic. He wondered who the guest would be. His younger brother stepped out along with Aether's mentor - a human slightly shorter than the three of them, a brunette woman he believed was called Julia of the Lightning. It was odd that her hair colour was Julia's only distinctive feature, but Dan supposed there was a spell she knew that was influencing his ability to perceive her.

Julia demonstrated her part of the spell on the blonde teacher rather than her red headed student. It made little sense to Dan but he could see his brother's brown eyes following closely as his pale skinned hands mimicked her motions. He didn't really see any change to Solfis but he had to follow the motions and words his mentor made before his body was obscured by flames.

The two students were guided through their respective parts of the casting by their teachers. First Aether cast the sky spell which Dan could now feel forming a vortex around him, then as he repeated the words and motions the outside of that was wrapped in swirling flames. A very useful spell, the flames seemed to only attack living targets, as Julia demonstrated though it seemed they could not tell friend from foe, her weapon was unharmed but when her arm entered the barrier it was slightly burned and needed to be healed. Solfis on the other hand had been standing across the vortex when it formed and must have been protected by some magic because if an unprotected individual had been standing where he was they would be injured across the front of their body.

Dan and Aether practiced under supervision for the rest of the lesson. They hoped that they would soon be able to do so unsupervised. They also learnt an important part of the theory behind the spell, it did not have to be the twin spells they had just learned, anyone could be the eye of a whirlwind wrapped in a fire vortex to make it work, the intent of creating the right type of vortex was much more important than the formal spell.
