Chapter 1: Fire

Aster had been picking berries when he heard a squelching noise behind him. He looked up in confusion, only to not find anything out of the ordinary and got back to gathering.

A few minutes later he hears the noise again, but louder and more disgusting sounding. This time when he turns around, eyes searching the edge of the forest, he spots the source of the noise. There, not too far away, was a green slime creature with eyes and a mouth.

Aster, startled, didn’t move for a moment as the warnings of his parents rang in his ears. He knew the forest was dangerous, but he was in an area deemed safe so it was not only uncommon, but rather unsettling to see the creature here.

The creature itself took his stupor as a chance to sploosh across the ground towards him, absorbing sticks and other things in its path and dissolving them within its body.

As Aster shook off his bewilderment, fear took its place as the creature got closer. He tried to scoot away only to be met with the prickers of the berry bush pressing against his back. By now it was too late to get up and run, even if Aster had the time he was held still by dread.

The creature was now near enough that the next gooey jump it makes brings it dangerously close to him. With nowhere left to go, Aster raises his hand in defense, while his other arm covers his face

Suddenly a burning pain starts in the fingertips of his outstretched hand and spreads up his arm to his shoulder. Gritting his teeth, Aster refuses to look at his arm, thinking that the slime creature had got him. But when the pain receded and he heard a hissing noise, he glanced at his arm, prepared to find the creature ready to absorb the rest of him. Instead his arm was fully intact and there was a steaming puddle of goo in front of him.

Aster stared at it in shock, not understanding what had happened until he noticed the slightly scorched grass around the goop.

β€œFire,” He breathed, looking at his hands in awe and fear.
