Chapter 1: Meadows and Mountains

Light shone through clouded skies, illuminating the range known as the Iridescent mountains. Bouncing off silver rock and through fluttering leaves, it shows a small clearing in the trees, a lone figure sits, blackened wings sprawled out behind them; Framed by the surrounding forest.

Kami sighs as she stands from the ledge she was resting on, 371 years does a lot to one's body and, apparently, the land she used to live. The mountains stayed mostly the same, and the beasts that call it home seem pretty friendly all things considered. But the village…. It's no longer a place where people live, trees sprouting from rundown houses, bushes growing through walkways, weeds spreading in overgrown yards, and wild animals running amok. If she was being honest with herself, this is a much better view than the one she was raised in… the people that lived here were not always kind. Glancing around the place she had been resting on, she allowed herself to smile. The flowing river could be heard not far from here and the rocky landscape made sure humans never stepped foot on her home. Taking one last look around, she jumped from the ledge- gliding towards the place that was once her whole world, and landed in the main square.

Walking through the village Kami felt odd. This was her nightmare once upon a time, and now it seems to almost reflect the calm she found; the feeling of peace she carved from war stricken lands. Glancing over at one of the many buildings, she recalled her friend, a young man (not so young now) named Valens. A gruff man that spent his whole life running a bakery. He taught her a lot about the world, and his mom let her read the books in the village library, she even taught her how to write. Stepping into the building almost felt like a crime. the once beautiful countertop, and polished floor now cracked and decayed beyond repair. glancing over towards the stairs she decided that was enough, and left the blacked staircase behind.

Stepping away from the worn down bakery, Kami walked to her childhood hiding spot, an old park, now hidden by a mess of bushes and overgrown grass. She stepped forward only sparing a thought on how unsafe the equipment was before climbing one of the wooden playhouses and sitting on the top. Wings folded behind her she looked towards the sun and laughed. This world was not kind to those that live as long as her. But she found her peace. A place to rest when things get too hard… And it's even getting back at those jerks calling themselves the village elders, though they are long since dead… Laughter fading out she sat in peace, just relaxing in the only place that could be considered her homeland.

By the time night hit, Kami had grown tired, having not moved from her spot on the top of the play house. Standing feeling the protest of her now stiff joints, she flared her wings and took to the sky; feeling the rushing wind, and seeing the stars all around her she made her way to the mountain range. She flew past the ledge she rested on before to a mountain much bigger than the last, landing on the snow covered peak, she made her way to one of the dragon settlements below marked by what gave this range its name, the Iridescent ice towers sticking high into the sky. They reflect the light of the moon and sun to make the snow look like it is covered in rainbows.
