Chapter 1: Hearts and Hooves Tradition

Brownie Sundae dimmed the lights throughout the household as Sweetberry Cobbler positioned the last of lit candles in the living room. They would spend together in this simulated blackout, as was their Hearts and Hooves tradition. Sweetberry Cobbler was already settled within their fortress of pillows and blankets, her offering to the food spread laid in the middle.

She put together a charcuterie board, loaded with interesting meats, cheeses, nuts, and grains. The only hint of any sort of sweetness were pieces of dark chocolate. Brownie brought his own platter, loaded with sweets and fruits, and not a piece of vegetable to be found. It was something that would make any foal squeal in delight, gorge themselves on, and consequently crash and burn several hours later into a sugar coma. Brownie Sundae was certain that if he didn’t have Sweetberry Cobbler, the base of his diet would be chocolate.

As Brownie Sundae settled down, he nuzzled himself into his wife’s side. She curled her neck around and gently kissed him on the forehead. He kisses her on the neck in return. With a loving sigh and a quick nuzzle on the nose between them, they spent time doing small activities near each other. Sweetberry Cobbler caught up on a novel she fell behind on reading and Brownie Sundae decided to give crocheting a try, squinting in the candlelight as he tried to follow along in a book he picked up.

Sweetberry Cobbler was the first to grab something off of the charcuterie boards. Very carefully she picked out some combination of meat, cheese spread, and a cracker to build herself a snacker sandwich. Brownie Sundae had his hooves full and his brow furrowed during a particularly twisty part of crocheting that he was decidedly not very coordinated with. Several moments later, he finally found his way around the issue. Wrongly, but that’s all a part of learning. Nonetheless, he rewards his efforts with a chocolate piece and sweet fruit.

“How’s your project coming along?” Sweetberry Cobbler asked after she finished her current chapter. She pushed the book aside and adjusted to show she was ready to give her full attention to her husband.

“Uh…” Brownie Sundae started, staring at the tangled mess of yarn around his hooves and crochet hooks. “Well enough.”

Sweetberry Cobbler gently laughed before wrapping her forelegs around him and pulling him close to her chest. Brownie Sundae put up no fight and was easily dragged into her embrace. Sweetberry Cobbler pulled a nearby blanket over the two of them.

“This is so much nicer without a thunderstorm raging outside that legitimately knocks out our power,” Brownie sighed, wrapping a hoof around Sweetberry to pull himself closer.

“As scary as that storm was, it did bring us together. And gave us a nice Hearts and Hooves tradition.” the mare added, closing her eyes as she rested her head on Brownie’s.
