Chapter 1: A Tantalizing Trial

This had to be a dream. There was no way he was this lucky in life. Raymen clutched the shiny normal rank guild badge in his hand, he couldn’t help himself from shaking. He still couldn’t believe it. Was it apprehension? Excitement? He was going in alone, after all. He couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to enroll into the Aristolas guild with a partner around.

Taking a deep breath, and exhaling the darker blue riolu’s thoughts cleared. This is going to be easy. Raymen tried to convince himself. Just…go inside. It took a few brief heartbeats, but eventually Raymen opened the door to the courtroom to be hit by a flood of emotions that overwhelmed him.

The courtroom was more grandiose than he ever expected. The pictures from his studies of such a historical building never gave the architecture justice in the slightest, and it took the young pokemon several moments to catch his own breath as he eyed the marble spirals that were so masterfully crafted that hugged the walls.

The southern end of the room the Judge’s bench lay as a raised dark wooden podium, a small amphitheater right behind it for the jury. A white and black dragon carved intricately out of stone stood right alongside the bench facing the east and west away from the other, with a golden eye and red eye shining in the stone respectively. Reshiram and Zekrom. The Pokemon of Truth and Ideals. Although typically depicted in mythology as rivals, both ideologies resonate with what the judicial system hopes to achieve in the end.

Raymen could feel the emotions of previous cases hit him like a truck. The stinging pains of remorse of those previously found guilty. The contagious happiness of witnesses and those of afflicted parties knowing that in the end. They had justice. Although some were stronger than others based on how truly recent the case was, it was enough to make him feel nauseous. In a sense, his strange aura powers were interesting, but unsurprisingly, a big pain in the rear. I mean how many other pokemon could you tell that you could practically feel the events in the past, as if they were happening right in front of you?

In the center waiting for him, were the riolu’s clients: A zorua and a luxray, looking expectant, the duo looking rather calm despite the tone of desperation in the help request.

The zorua practically dwarfed in size compared to the Gleam Eyes Pokemon right next to her. She adorned ornate mystical clothing, in royal shades of purple. Her eyes shone like two blue full moons. Upon closer inspection, Raymen would be surprised to find small tufts of red fur sprouting out of the zorua’s ears, like the flame tufts from a fennekin.

Raymen blinked in surprise. Rarely has he seen any of these tricky black fox creatures, and one that seemed to be a mix! Or to even see one alongside the intimidating blue electric wielding lion was strange, that was for certain. Shaking his head, he would give the luxray a sheepish salute. “Hello there! I am Raymen, I take it you're my client for the missing bad-”

“Not so loud! Please…” The luxray hissed. “I can’t let anyone know I did it again…”

Again?! Raymen thought to himself in exasperation. “So… this isn’t the first time?”

“No…” The luxray said, sheepishly as he put a paw behind his luscious mane of jet black hair. He was rather finely dressed himself in a dark navy suit, expected for the occupation.  “We looked everywhere this time, and still couldn’t find it.” Defeat shining in his yellow and red eyes.

“You lost it good this time, Nick!” The young zorua chuckled, bearing a playful grin that was infamous from the illusion pokemon before getting a bit of an irritated glare from the luxray.

“It’s not funny! The trial is tomorrow, and I’m screwed if I don’t find it!”

“No worries, sir! I will find it for you as soon as I can!” Raymen piped up, feeling a sudden rush of confidence for this situation despite how grand the building was, and all the possible places the small golden trinket could hide.

“So you were here when you last had it?” Raymen asked, rubbing his head to try to block out the wave of emotions that were suffocating to him. His strange abilities would prove to be useless for this mission as he started to search.

Raymen felt the fatigue deep in the marrow of his bones as what felt like eternity passed him by, with mild frustration bubbling every place he looked, only to lead to expectantly disappointing results. It was seeming more and more likely to the riolu that some pokemon, presumingly a child, had taken the small golden emblem and ran off with it, never to be seen again.

Raymen sat in front of the marble reshiram statue, hoping that a break at least would clear his mind for what will no doubt be another grueling search for the lost badge with the grieving attorney and his strange mystic friend.

He stared up at the statue for a minute, as if silently asking Arceus for help finding the lost badge, when suddenly he felt the strong emotion of malice radiating in his soul. Personally, he passed off this emotion of the past as being the feelings of some conniving criminal who got away with one of their heinous crimes and failed to be punished for it, but why were these feelings closer to the reshiram statue? Puzzled, Raymen expediently searched the statue, despite how ridiculous it seemed with a newfound energy. What if someone planned something odious to befall onto the courthouse, and planted something malicious right on the statue?

Then, there it was. He couldn’t believe it. Implanted right on the face of the pristine white dragon statue, right in the socket in place of one of its red eyes, was the attorney’s badge! A wave of relief flared and exasperation hit as the golden sheen of the beautiful pin shone back at his golden eyes. Who put it here? Why? All the questions and potential explanations raced around the short fighting type’s head. But they didn’t matter all that much as he raced back towards his clients, his dark smoky gray almost black chest puffed up in pride.

this was such a joy to read! the choice of zorua is such a nice choice of a homage, and your wording for the setting of the courthouse is super visual and gives me a good idea of your vision for the place! i loved the lil twist at the end, too : D
