Story Summary

In an attempt to preserve these letters, Thaire has begun recording them and submitting them to a writing museum. They are currently regarded as the first known instance of the Paper Demon Phenomenon being recorded on paper, first discovered by Jordini Harrell. If you are interested in reading of how to do this for yourself, perhaps stay and learn how the great Jordini learned to do it, and the things she saw along the way.

Chapter 1: Letter 1

Dear Thaire,

It’s been a couple of months since I last wrote to you, but what a long few months it’s been. Maybe you have heard that new theory floating around, the World Creation Theory. If not, it essentially states that one should be able to make their own world through writing, just like a character, and travel to it. And I am writing to confirm to you that it is, indeed, real.

I have now been able to confirm that yes, you can travel to any world of your choosing, simply by writing it, along with a few other steps. I will list them here, then, that you may try it for yourself.

1. Write a few paragraphs about the setting of your world. If you intend to land in a specific city, write a few sentences specifically about said city.

2. Spend a bit of time thinking about your world, characters, and the history of your world.

3. Go through the normal process to summon a character. When you awake, you should be within the world of your creation.

If it’s hard to simply imagine how this works, I can say that I found this to be true through personal testing. I was gone for about a month in the world of my creation, Euthawal. It is a typical medieval fantasy world, I didn’t want to choose anything too complicated for my first try at this.

Though, you should be forewarned. Entering the world seems to have consequences on the further sequence of events, permanently altering the story you have with that world forever. When I entered, people treated me as a beggar or criminal, though the people from the world of your making may treat you differently.

Also, unless you specifically write it into being, no one should recognize you as their creator. In fact, they likely won’t know your name. If you wish to tell them this, you may, but it might cause an existential crisis among them without proper diffusion.

Now, you may well wonder, whatever happened in the world Euthawal? Well, despite being quite a generic and bland place, it has a rich history. It was quite fun to go there, despite the hardships I struggled with along the way.

Euthawal is a world on a circular continent, with mountains to the northwest forming a cirque, in which the capital of the Nature Kingdom is housed. In the waters surrounding this continent, there is a kingdom called the Ocean Kingdom, where people called Pehlagos make their home among the reefs. To the southwest, there is the Strength Kingdom, home of the people known for their incredible strength and agility. Along a small mountain range that breaks off from the circular mountains to the northeast is the small Air Kingdom, the mountains covered with many windmills. To the southeast, there is the Psychic Kingdom, quite large, filled with people known for their magical ability to read minds. Above the Psychic Kingdom, there is the Fire Kingdom to the east, home to the people known for their fiery spirits and magic. And, finally, in the northeast lies the landlocked Light Kingdom, once known for the “moonrisers”, which have since disappeared.

Now, if I were to enter the specifics of the history behind these kingdoms, this letter would become far too long for even the most dedicated fan of my works to read. So, instead, simply know that they have been fighting for a very long time. There has not been peace among all of the kingdoms for nearly two hundred thousand years. So, obviously, the people from these kingdoms have hated each other for a very long time.

But, then, five teenagers representing different kingdoms meet and join together, and they become quite close. Yes, they are the main characters of this book. And yes, I was able to meet them.

It is far different to meet your characters in their native land than to summon them to ours. They act far different- yes, I remember so vividly how they reacted to my coming, threatening me with a sword! To this day, I still have no idea what would happen if you were to die or get badly injured in one of these realms, but I have no care to find out.

So, now, having proven this theory, I wish to test its limits. I simply wished to tell you that, if you visit me and I am not there, I may be off, testing the theory again and again, eagerly searching for the answers to my latest questions.

And, I have been thinking. Despite the theory of this being possible being called the World Creation Theory, since I was the one to confirm its existence, I believe I should be allowed to name it whatever pleases me. So, from now on, this I will refer to as the “Paper Demon Phenomenon”, abbreviated as PDP.

So, then, I would like to test the boundaries of the Paper Demon Phenomenon, such as removing the first step entirely and simply copying from someone else’s work. Or, perhaps, trying to summon an already written book to see what exactly occurs in that scenario. Please, do not be alarmed if I am not home for months at a time, though I intend to stay no longer than three months in a world, so that I may return home to you and tell you about it.

And, perhaps, if I begin this venture, I may be able to bring back new friends. After all, there must be people in these realms that I can befriend, despite my time with them being so short-lived. But I will tell them all about you, and myself, and our world.

So, with nothing else to say, I leave you with these things to ponder. If you would like, perhaps, you could try this for yourself, or simply stay alert for later letters I may send you, that you may hear of my travails. I apologize if you ever truly need me here in our world, but I shall be off with my book characters. For, just like you, your first creation also treats her characters like her children, and now, I intend to visit them often in their own native land.

With Great Love,

Jordini
