Chapter 3: Cornered Cats Will Bite Back

An image appeared in midair; Caroline slammed her fist down angrily. “Dammit!” she growled, “That gem’s in a local museum, in a glass case. You could see it fifteen feet away. Of all the fucking places in this piece of crap world, it’s in a fucking museum! If she hasn’t found that piece of shit yet, I’m pretty fucking amazed.” All jaws at the table dropped; where did she hear that kind of language? It couldn’t be from her family; they rarely cursed like that. “Dude,” Friday said, “You to lay off the MTV for a while. Zeesh.” “Sorry.” “Take a closer look,” a still stunned Baldasarre suggested. Caroline leaned forward and sighed. In the center of the topaz-rimmed Azurite, a small teardrop-shaped bloodstone glistened in the false holographic light.

Jatin silently inhaled the soft scent of baby shampoo, berry blast deodorant, and coco butter facial scrub. Damn, she’s arousing, he thought as he eyed her. For a split second, his black eyes met her gold left eye and purple right eye. A slight smile curled her full pink lips, then she looked away, hoping no one noticed. She couldn’t get the arousing scent of sweat, mild deodorant, and fur out of her memory. He’s cute and he smells good. I think he likes me. “So,” Dallas was saying, “us full-bloods will find the gem, fight Kinaree’tolo, and take the victory.” “WHAT?!” Caroline sprang up and got into Dallas’s face. “Like hell you will! Gimmie a break! It’s time us Half-Demons put you Demons in your place!” “You mean above you?” Dallas laughed.

“Bastard!” “Whore!” “Asshole!” “Bitch!” “Queer!” The two charged, only to be stopped by Jatin and Fathia. “Let go!” Caroline yelled, struggling to free herself from Jatin’s strong arms, which were wrapped around her own arms. “Not until you settle down,” he growled softly into her ear. Everyone in the room could see the lightning shooting between Dallas and Caroline’s eyes as they continued to snarl and struggle free of their captors’ holds. “Dallas!” Jadon said, slapping his friend a few times, “chill! You started it, remember!” Dallas stopped struggling, exhausted and pissed. Fathia released her hold and Dallas walked back to his seat, growling and clenching his fists.

After a few seconds, Caroline also calmed down and returned to her seat, hoping her bronzer was hiding her extremely red face. Her attitude was soon turned 180 degrees, however, as she took advantage of the location of Dallas’s seat, which was next to her. Putting her hand on his, she calmly said, “I guess I was bit out of line. How about we find the gem together.” She dug her nails into the back of his hand. “Ow.” “Fight the Demon together.” “Ow.” “And share the victory together. “Yee-OWCH!!!” “Good, I’m glad we agree. Now, we need a plan…” Suddenly, Aeryn burst into the room and said, “Natsu! I’m bored!” “Why don’t you go play with Dallas’s four-wheeler?” Caroline asked, shooting an evil grin in Dallas’s direction.

“Nah, I’ll find something to do. Bye!” “Whew.” “Yee!” “I’ll go see what she’s doing.” Caroline ran to the window in time to see Dallas’s four-wheeler crash into a pine tree. Aeryn flew up to the window and yelled, “That was fun!” before flying off. “Uh,” Caroline snickered, “Dallas, does your four-wheeler have insurance? ‘Cause it’s entire front end is smashed against a tree.” “Oh, man!” Dallas moaned, “That thing cost me a lot of money!” “Is its tail pipe supposed to be on fire?” “Oh, no…” FWOOOM!!! Caroline and Dallas stood gaping at the pile of burnt metal that was an expensive four-wheeler. Dallas stuttered, giggled like a moron, and feinted.

Caroline, meanwhile, was rolling on the multi-colored carpet, laughing like someone was mercilessly tickling her. Her laughter had a pitch and regularity closely resembling that of a hyena’s laugh. She got up, wiping the tears from her eyes and giggled, “Does the insurance cover that?” Dallas (who’d recovered from his feinting spell) glared at her and said, “You’re the Devil.” “Tell me something I don’t know, amigo.” “Guys!” Fathia snarled, “We can argue later. Right now we have to figure out how to save Earth, remember?” “Right.” “Whatever.” “Wait a minute,” Friday said, “What about Jatin, Baldasarre, and Zafira?” “What about us?” Zafira sniffed. “Did you come here to help or warn us?” “We came here to warn you,” Baldasarre said, “We need to head back to Vejita-sie and get some help.”

“I’ll stay behind,” Jatin said, “They’ll need some help finding the gem.” “Are you sure, brother?” “Of course; if we all go, they’ll be on their own for six weeks.” “I thought it took a year just to get here from your planet,” Monique said. “No,” Zafira shook her head, “By using Z-Space portals, we can cut the travel time into a six-week round trip between here and Vejita-sie.” “Fine,” Baldasarre said, “Zafira and I will get back up while Jatin stays here and helps you.” Jatin nodded, and his two comrades left for their home world. “May the gods watch over you,” Jatin whispered.

Deep in the Demonic Hells, Kinaree’tolo viewed the new allies via her magic hand mirror. She giggled in an almost pitying tone and said, “So, the future Guardians of the Light seek to stop me from avenging my brother. I’m amused. They’re so innocent. So kind. So nauseating.” She turned to her two underlings, Talana’ree and Misuka’lee, and snapped, “Take your warriors and use any means necessary to capture and bring them here. Go!” The two Half-Demons nodded and vanished in clouds of pink smoke. Turning back to the mirror, the ginger-haired Demoness smiled wickedly as she began to plan how she would torture the Guardians until they surrendered to her power.

“We ready to go?” Fathia said. The entire group (minus Friday, who was staying behind with Aeryn) had gathered in front of her house, each in their own battle armor. “Not yet,” Caroline snarled, annoyed as this was the fifth time Fathia had asked, “We have to wait until my team and the Angelic Sinners get here! I just got off the phone with Angelina and Mike. Both teams are almost here.” “How close?” Monique sneered. “Too far for us to go yet. Fathia, is your Demon Lion ready?” “Yes,” a gruff voice said, “I am ready.” Behind the group, an auburn-maned lion the size of a tank sat on the soft grass, his tail gently twitching as it lay next to his left paws. “There they are!” Jadon shouted. To the West, seven Demonics and two Griffons could be seen flying towards the mansion.

Jatin barely had time to turn his scouter off before it exploded; the combined ki energies of everyone present were too great for the scouter to handle all at once. “Hello,” he said politely, “I am Jatin, Second-Class Elite Warrior.” Angelina, the girl with pink and gold-streaked hair that was swept back and slightly to the right, stepped forward, smiled and said, “I’m Angelina. The girl with the bleached blonde hair is Niki, and the girl with the curly black hair is Elaine.” Mike, the boy with brown hair that looked like it hadn’t been brushed in days, shook Jatin’s hand and said, “I’m Mike. The girl with the navy and white-streaked hair? That’s Nicole. The boy with the blood-red hair is Chase. The guy with red and sky-streaked hair? That’s Chase’s twin brother, Tazz.”

Things seem to have gotten serious. I hope Jatin knows what he’s doing. We’ll know in Chapter Four: The Quest Begins!
