Story Summary

Pavia burns with scorching heat and beauty, and Penny knew she had to see the Spires while she was in the portal. She enjoys the majesty of the desert from high in the sky, and despite a brief life-threating hiccup, she found the excursion to be quite rewarding.

Prompt 1

Hours in from the coast, a vast field of layered fingers of rock jut out from the desert. The exposed layers of sediment make a veritable rainbow of colors ranging from vivid reds and sleek golds to deep purples and slate blues. While the Spires do attract tourists, the remote location and danger of toppling spires leaves it mostly populated by daredevils both local and intergalactic. Many use it for high stakes races. Show your character among the Strata Spires. Your piece must include your character and striped towers of rock.

Chapter 3: Trust Fall

The racers from the town were clearly visible in their brightly colored uniform. There were a lot of other racers two, each team standing out like neon lights against the dark desert floor. Having real lights also made them stand out as they flew their flying vehicles. Penny didn't think too much about them as she watched them fly right by her spire until the very last one clipped just a bit too close. The driver sped by as if nothing had happened, but the little amount of turbulence was just enough to cause something terrible to happen. She felt the ground shake, then cacophonous cracks rang out with the suddeness of lightning and the volume of thunder. Then everything came crashing down, just as she was warned.

Time slowed as Penny began to panic. Within a moment she was in freefall as she slipped off the stone. She grasped desperatly at something, anything that might help her, but found nothing stable to support her. Words left her mind and a startled scream left her mouth. What could she do? As she was struggling she grabbed a rock and an idea shot off in her mind. It was either really smart or really dumb, but she wouldn't know till she had done it. There was no time to grab a leaf and charge it with her magic so she popped the rock into her mouth. That was where the leaves were anyway. Charging her magic Penny blew out the rock which stretched out like a weird spaghetti noodle. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. Now for the part she was worried about as she didn't know if her magic was even capable of it. The noodle rock hit several other falling rocks before hitting a solid section of another spire. It stuck to the spire and the other rocks began to glow with Penny's magic. They also started stretching out and combining to create a very long rope-like strand. Focusing on her ability Penny changed the rocks property to become even more rope-like and hung on for dear life.

The rock rope was sturdy and she felt the shift in g-force as she swung on it and it swung her back up. She was expecting that, but not this high and not this fast! Her hand slipped and she lost the rope. Then something incredible happened. Penny was thrown up higher into the sky and was surrounded by stars. It was not her first time being this high up, the Crystal Wyrm had done a similar thing, but with the stars out she felt like she was a star. Like she had become a part of the night. Were it not for the terrifying experience she would have loved it, but gravity was not happy with her being so high up. It pulled her back down, and she managed to grab the rock rope again. Fixing her grip she hung on as it swung back and forth until it eventually came to a stop. She was only a few feet from the ground when it was over. Feeling eager to step foot on solid ground again she dropped down to the desert floor.

Fear and shock froze her in place on the ground, and then those feeling shifted into a strange elated joy that was surely an adrenelin rush. A nervous and shaky giggle escaped her lips before becoming full hearted laugher. Her dumb and impulsive plan had actually worked. She found she could trust her magic and she literaly touched the sky! It was amazing!

"Did anyone see that!?" Penny laughed and looked around; arms out like a showman. Only the wind responed. The racers were long gone and it was a long walk to any civilization. That smile became a frown. Sure, doing stuff for the novelty of it was nice, but what's the point of doing something awesome if no one was there to see it?

Penny decided not to let that last point bother her for too long. It was late and she was certain she saw an inn earlier in the day. Figuring it was past time to check into an inn Penny pulled up her boots and good measure and ran off. The life threating hiccup was not a pleasent way to end the day, but overall it had been a wonderful day.
