Chapter 2: A New Plan

Logan woke up with a start, his eyes snapping open as he realized he had fallen asleep. He sat up quickly, groaning in frustration as he rubbed his eyes. He couldn't believe he had let himself fall asleep in the middle of the forest when he should have been focused on finding his friends.

"Rotom, why didn't you wake me up?" Logan asked, his voice still groggy from sleep.

"I wanted you to get some rest," Rotom replied in his robotic voice. "Besides, while you were sleeping, I did some scouting around the area."

Logan narrowed his eyes, feeling slightly annoyed that Rotom had been exploring without him. But then he realized that his companion had probably done it for their own good.

"And what did you find?" Logan asked, his curiosity piqued, but the annoyance still lacing his voice.

"There's a village in the distance that might have supplies we'll need for our journey," Rotom said.

Logan raised an eyebrow. "Supplies? Like what?"

"Food, medicine, everything we need for the journey ahead," Rotom explained.

Logan sighed, feeling a sense of defeat wash over him. He had wanted to find his friends as quickly as possible, but it seemed like they would need to make a detour to the village first.

"Fine," Logan said, standing up and stretching his tired muscles. "Let's go to the village."

For a while, Logan and Rotom trekked through the forest, their footsteps crunching on the leaves and twigs underfoot. Logan knew his way around the forest like the back of his hand, and his physique was built for endurance. But even he felt the strain of their journey as they walked deeper into the forest.

As they neared the outskirts of the village, Logan began to feel a sense of unease. He didn't like the idea of walking into an unknown place, especially when he didn't know what kind of people or pokemon might be there.

"Stay close, Rotom," Logan muttered under his breath.

The village was small, but bustling with activity. People walked around with baskets full of fruits and vegetables, and small pokemon darted around the streets, chasing each other playfully. Logan's eyes scanned the area, looking for any signs of trouble, but he saw nothing out of the ordinary.

"Let's split up," Logan said to Rotom. "You go check out the farmer’s market and see if they have anything palatable. I'll go look for medicine."

Rotom buzzed in agreement and floated off towards the farmer’s market. Logan headed to a small market, where vendors were selling all sorts of supplies.

As Logan walked through the market, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. This village seemed friendly and safe, and he began to feel more at ease, but no matter how hard he’d tried all these years, the presence of people never did sit right with him.

As he walked along the stalls searching for anything useful he heard some commotion in the distance. Darting back into the forest, dodging over a large stone to where the noise was coming from, he saw a small pokemon that he recognized as a Dragon Type, being attacked by a much larger Ice Type Breloom. The Breloom had cornered the Pumpkaboo, and it looked like it was about to launch a powerful attack.

Without thinking, Logan sprang into action. He ran towards the Breloom, his fists clenched, and jumped into the air, landing between the Pumpkaboo and Breloom and taking a harsh strike to the stomach. With a yelp of pain he staggered backwards but was able to keep his footing.

“That all you got?” He asked the Breloom.

The Breloom responded with aggressive ice punches which Logan desperately tried to block. Logan had spent a lot of time practicing Cross Poison with Crobat like this, but he had always known Crobat wasn’t attacking with all its strength- this Breloom did not have an inch of the same mercy for him.

As the assault went on the Breloom's attacks were starting to take their toll. Logan’s movements became sluggish, and his breathing became labored, he struggled more to block each incoming strike, and it was clear the Breloom was growing fed up with the encounter as well, but each time Logan’s willpower faltered he looked back to the Pumpkaboo who was cowering in the bushes, whimpering and watching as Logan desperately tried to fend off the Breloom. The scared look on the little pokemon’s face inspired him to fight back- but he knew he couldn’t keep this up much longer. Just as he thought he had a plan to end this fight the punches grew to a halt-

A moment of hope washed over Logan but it was quickly replaced by dread, the Breloom had stopped punching to charge up a much stronger breath attack- before Logan could react- the blinding light of Ice Beam washed over him-

How had he failed to protect just one pokemon?
