Chapter 1: Chapter 1

White Queen (As it began)

By kira

Challenge/gift fic for Jinxy-sama. I had a pairing of Sesshomaru and Kagura with a word limit of 600 words.

So sad her eyes
Smiling dark eyes
So sad her eyes
As it began...

My Goddess hear my darkest fear
I speak too late
It’s for evermore that I wait...

Dear friend goodbye
No tears in my eyes
So sad it ends
As it began...

Sesshomaru stared up into the night sky as a light breeze ruffled his long silvery hair. It had been a few days since Kagura’s death and the taiyoukai missed her terribly. Everything from the stars in the night sky to the faintest of breezes conjured up memories of the spirited young wind youkai. Sesshomaru sighed softly. If only you had managed to break free from that bastard, Naraku. Damn him for marring your back with his spider! And binding you to him somehow... His expression hardened. And when he... never has this Sesshomaru felt so helpless... Or felt so sorry he was unable to help you... The taiyoukai’s face clearly, if only briefly, showed his sorrow at that thought.

The night breeze gently caressed his cheek as if to assure him things were fine and that she did not blame him at all for what had happened. Sesshomaru ran the back of his finger against it, imagining it was her touch. She had never once touched him in a loving way, and yet, had he cared to notice, he would have seen just how deep her feelings were for him in the way she looked at him. As well as looked to him in her moments of need.

If only this Sesshomaru had known, then he might have loved you in return... He frowned. Then again, perhaps the fates had something else in mind... he thought as images of the other special woman in his life danced before his mind’s eye. He shook his head to banish those thoughts. He grieved for the wind user and he wanted to hold onto that grief with both hands, well, one hand anyway, he thought wryly.

He spun neatly on his heel and prepared to go back to his companions when the wind kicked up. This Sesshomaru is sorry, Kagura, he cannot stay here any longer... He closed his eyes, a slight frown creasing his brow. He saw her again as she was when she came to him, jewel shards in hand, pleading with him to help her break free of Naraku. But he stupidly let his pride get in the way in matters concerning the shards. Instead of looking beyond her offering, and breaking down and giving her what she needed most; a simple helping hand to point her in the right direction, he chose to assume she was capable of figuring it out for herself what would work. If only this Sesshomaru wasn’t so foolish, you might still be here...

The wind picked up, tangling his hair, and tugging on his fluff as if she was there, teasing him out of his funk. For the first time in days, he snorted softly in amusement, especially when the wind gusted between his legs in a none-too-gentle caress. He felt as if all he had to do was turn around and he would see her, laughing behind her fan, before sending another gust his way. He slowly turned around and looked upwards into the night sky. Squinting, he thought he could just make out the faintest wisp of her feather as she hurried off to do the spider’s bidding.

This Sesshomaru promises to avenge you, Kagura... and he promises to never forget you...
