3 Latent Element

Magic is in the air!

Your character will face many unknowns and trials in the near future. But they won’t go out unarmed! Your PaperDemon OC (Original Character) has a Latent Element. Their latent element is an elemental magical ability that your character can use in both your original art and stories as well as game mechanics. This magical power will aid them in their journey across the many realms of the universe. In this challenge, you will be drawing or writing about your character using their Latent Element.

Challenge instructions

  • If you haven't done so, make sure you complete the Character Creation Challenge. This is required before proceeding.

  • Check your character sheet (instructions below) to find out what element your character has been assigned. If you haven't been assigned one yet or don't see your character sheet, contact [email protected].

    Character sheet

    Every character has a sheet that includes basic stats and the items they currently have equipped. You'll need to reference it often.

    To find your character sheet and your element assignment:

    1. Click your icon in the upper right. Choose My Characters
    2. On your characters list page, click on the character you're completing this challenge for
    3. Under Elemental Power below the Character Data it should state what element the character has: Earth, Fire, Water, or Sky.

    As you complete challenges and gain more power, you'll see your character sheet updated to reflect your character's new stats.

  • Limit one element per character.

  • Complete either an art entry or a writing entry (not both). See below.

Available Elements

When your character was registered, a latent element was assigned to you. But if you'd like, you can customize your character with a different element by purchasing an Elemensha crystal.

Your character will be using this element for in-game mechanics in the future, so choose wisely! The element will affect your character’s elemental magic in battle.

Art Entry

Draw a picture of your OC using their element.

  • You should include at least ½ of your OC’s body.

  • Background is optional.

  • Make sure your character is identifiable in the image.

  • The image does not need to be perfectly polished, but should have some color or greyscale tone.

  • You may be creative with how your character’s element presents, but it must not look like an element it is not.

  • Submit your artwork using the form at the bottom of this page. Include in the artwork description

    • Which element your character has.

    • A brief note on how your character feels about that element.

Writing entry

Write a short story about your character discovering their element that is at least 800 words. The story should answer the following questions:

  • What element does your character have?

  • How does your character feel about it?

After posting your submission, submit your writing to the queue using the form at the bottom of this page.

Ideas and Prompts

Stuck? Not sure what to draw? No stories coming to mind? Take a look at this list for some ideas! You’re welcome to use any of them in your own work. If none of these prompts appeal to you, feel free to make your own!

  • What happened when your character first discovered their element?

  • Did your character have a mentor who taught them how to use their element? Explore that relationship through art or story.

  • What does your character use their element for? Battle? Trickery? Construction or destruction? Draw or write them using their ability in the way they use it most commonly.

  • Does your character even like their magical abilities? Draw or write about your character’s fear or uncertainty about their element. (a water elemental afraid of the ocean, a fire elemental terrified by the way their hands catch flame when they’re angry.)

  • What is an unconventional way you can draw or write your character using their element? (a fire elemental melting rock into lava to make a bridge across a chasm, a water elemental pushing the water away from their heads to make an air bubble for them to breathe underwater, ect)

  • Does your character craft their own spells or just use their magic the way they would use an arm or a leg? What does it look like when they cast? (Do they draw or summon an alchemical circle? Do their eyes glow when they use their element?)

  • Is your character an expert at their element or still in the beginning stages of learning? (an earth elemental struggling to move enough dirt to plant a flower vs. an earth elemental who can raise up city walls with a single gesture.)

More notes

If you want to switch your character’s element later, you may purchase an Elemensha to change your character’s element. You do NOT need to recomplete this challenge.

Your element will affect the elemental attacks your character will have available in Battles
