I think you're on the right track with the lighting on his shirt! Might I suggest applying that glow to the rest of his outline? Since he's backlit by the sunset, the light would still shine around his edges while keeping the part of him facing the camera mostly in shadow.
(I think this term is called "rim lighting" - there are probably pictures on the internet that illustrate this better than my explanation ^-^)
