He was a human child until he was cursed (it was ignorance, really. stranger danger exists for a reason) by a evil wizard. To punish him for his curiosity (that threatened to reveal the wizard's evil schemes), he got turned into a cat. it was rather ironic, really. He barely managed to escape, the only thing keeping the spell from completing being his new... tail slamming into a shelf full of potions that spilled over the both of them. 

Oddly enough, nobody really noticed. Despite their adversive nature toward magical creatures, the village didn't notice that one of their children was, in fact, a magical creature. Maybe because of one of the potions he spilled. Either that, or they just didn't care for some reason. Either way, he'd rather not test his luck.
