Upon finding the manuscripts, a younger Hal looked through the different entries. Each defined different abilities used by forgotten adventurers.
One caught his interest. It entailed the manipulation of Earth; if one could learn to live and blend well in the environment, they could manipulate the wilderness to do as they wish.
Because he had a pallet consisting of browns, whites, and black, followed by green, Hal was advantageous. Birch trees became his best friends, allowing him to hide from predators and prey. Vines and thorns helped him in the heat of battle and the rush of retreat, but flowers and moss around him kept him obscured. He found it a brilliant tool for survival and ambushes, and while not pleasant to get moss on his face or vines tightly wrapping around his legs, it's a great benefit.
When over, the flowers begin to wilt, the moss falls away, and the pale man returns to his business.
