The naming

Zingela, the clan's sangoma is equal parts healer, mage, spiritual leader, and something to scare the most rowdy pups into obedience.  When she grants an infant their name, they become an acknowledged clan member, and can no longer die without being mourned.  
Fisi had been hinting the bright red edging on the fledgling's new feathers would make something like "Bloodwing" a great name, but when the tall brown hyena climbed to the youngster's hollow high in the giant bouda tree the name she bestowed was quite different.
"M'lafi". she stated flatly, looking at the pudgy chick.  "The glutton.   Don't feed him so much, or he'll be too fat to fly."
