There Must Be Something in the Water

The night had long since fallen as the ship sat peacefully on calm waters, it's lanterns still illuminating the deep azure of the ocean all around them. Sihas had been wandering the deck, letting the others get some sleep below while he fed his hungry chick. Above him, the chiro stryx squeaked and flapped looking for bugs that might be attracted to the light. Whether it found them or not, Sihas had been about to go and look curiously, perhaps if it found some then he might be able to catch some for the hungry harpia chick as well. But as he reached the railings, he saw the water ripple. Leskim with their keen eyesight could see in the darkness far better than most others and so to him, the difference between the darkened waves and the shape moving towards them was unmistakable. A species well accustomed to war, and even prone to seeking it out, Sihas wasted no time. He reached for the nearest weapon, a long harpoon that had been brought with them to fend off any such sea monsters. Gripping it in a taloned hand, he raced towards the deck, yelling for the chiro to get out of range. Sensing his alarm, the creature finally spotted the dark shape and squeaked in fright as Sihas tried to get a closer look to determine what this thing really was.
