“And you’re sure this is the only way to get his attention?”

 

“Not the only way, no. But certainly the most effective.”

 

Eltanin tucked in a troublesome corner of his shirt as he stepped out from behind the changing room screen. Granted full access to the Thalassa family wardrobe with the singular instruction to ‘convince my brother to step into an obvious trap’, he couldn’t help being temporarily overwhelmed by the veritable trousseau of underwater finery now available for his selection. Shells, pearls, and traily things galore! It was so very hard to practice restraint in the physical presence of this wonderful collection, but ten minutes of dilly-dallying and mirror-posing later, he found a look that he was happy with. A form-fitting duet of a sharkskin shirt and hippocamp leather trousers formed the sleek base of the look, accented by a simple string of murex shells around the neck and pearl studs in each of his ears. Now a diadem of carved coral set with cabochons of abyssal quartz draped between the horns… and done!

 

Laguna couldn’t hide the flash of utter mortification that crossed her face when she took in the outfit from tip to toe.

 

“Hmm. Certainly a… choice. I never knew my brother to be into homeless criminal types, but I suppose surface madness afflicts even the sanest mind.”

 

“Listen, one of us has actually charmed their way into Ronin’s tide pool, and it wasn’t– you know, I’m just going to stop talking now.”

 

“That would be best, yes.” Laguna raised her staff once again, and a portal swirled open, showing a vast abyss. It wasn’t attuned yet; now it was Eltanin’s job to narrow down their target’s unique biosignature amidst millions of inhabitants across the Paperverse. He’d need a codeword, something that the merman would be irresistably drawn to, like sharks to day-old chum.
