Chapter 2: Autumn Arioso

“Why are we just standing around at this spot?” Summer Solo asks, watching as other ponies walk around him and his sister. They weren’t very far from the concessions and the smell of deep-fried festival food made his stomach gurgle.

“We’re meeting up with somepony.” Spring Serenade answered and used her wings to lightly batter his face. “Now just stand there and be tall. You’re easy to spot in a crowd.”

“You could be the tallest pony in Canterlot if you just flew.” Summer Solo made a bite for one of her feathers, letting it slip through his teeth.

“You can wait another moment.”

Summer Solo threw his head back and bent his knees as he groaned. The pegasus smacked him on his hocks and forced him to stand straight. He whinnied in protest and made a bite for her ears, managing to catch one of them. She shook her ear free from him and went to counter-attack, but something caught her interest in the crowd.

Spring Serenade wrapped a wing around Summer Solo’s neck and used the other wing to wave somepony down. Summer Solo watched the crowd part ever so slightly as another unicorn that he barely recognized from family photos approached the two of them.

“Uuuh, hey. Nice weather, eh?” Autumn Arioso, Summer Solo’s oldest sibling and only brother awkwardly greeted. He wore a cape across his body and wore round glasses. His beard was grown out, neatly trimmed, and styled into a classic unicorn twirl.

“Oh, hi.” Summer Solo returned, equally as awkward.

“Do you two even know each other’s names? Come on.” Spring Serenade rolled her eyes as she pulled both of her brothers into a headlock. “You two can at least pretend to like each other.”

“All right. You hungry, Summer?” Autumn Arioso asked, being the first to worm his way out of Spring Serenade’s wing grip.

“Celestia, yes! I’ve been wanting a funnel cake for as long as we’ve been here.”

“Wow, it’s all so expensive.” Autumn Arioso muttered under his breath as he got close enough to see the lettering.

“Yeah, they upcharge a lot during festivals. I think it’s because it costs so much to have a vending space.” Summer Solo explained.

“You know you can make funnel cake at home, right?” Autumn Arioso asked, raising an eyebrow at the other unicorn. “And probably better.”

“I don’t see how I can make anything better.”

“You can make it banana flavored.” Spring Serenade pipped in. “But we’re not heading all the way home to make our own deep-fried food when we can just get something here.”

“How can we help you?” a plump white unicorn mare called to the party of siblings. Her smile was big and cheerful.

“Uuuh, yeah can I get a cinnamon churro? He wants a funnel cake. And she wants, uh, fried ice cream.” the oldest sibling ordered for the bunch.

“Do you want any sauces on anything?”

“Does it cost extra?”

“No, sir.”

“Oh, sure. I’ll take a chocolate drizzle on my churro. Summer, you want anything on yours? Does the funnel cake come with extra sugar on top? Okay, then that. Spring? And chocolate drizzle on her’s, too. Thanks. How much? Oh dear, I think I brought enough…. Here you go. No problem, thank you.”

“Hey, you didn’t have to pay for all of that for us.” Summer Solo said as the vendor dipped behind her window to fulfill their orders. All that Summer Solo got was a dismissive wave from his brother as he tucked away his bag under his cloak.

“Oooh how I’ve missed funnel cake.” Summer Solo declared as he chomped into his cake. He and his siblings had found a comfortable patch of shaded clover to sit and enjoy their food.

“Think you’ll participate in that magic contest?” Spring Serenade asks Autumn Arioso with a mouth full of fried ice cream.

“I think I’ve had enough of my magic being judged this past month,” he answers, shaking off the headache of his recent exams. “I’ll just watch everyone else competing.”

“Maybe I’ll enter.” Summer Solo muses, licking powder sugar off of his nose.

“Are you… sure about that?” Spring Serenade asks him after a moment of silence with concern written all over her face. The younger unicorn didn’t have a great track record of taking losing well.

“I told you I’d try to have fun. And I want to give it a go. Besides, I’ve gotten pretty good with my magic.”

“Ah, figured out a new spell?” Autumn Arioso assumed.

“I’m really good at the levitation spell. I can hold a lot of different items of shapes and sizes and keep track of them all individually. Or I can hold a couple of heavier items.”

“That is an impressive mastery of a spell, yes. But that’s also a really basic spell that every unicorn is taught.” Autumn Arioso shook his head. “I don’t think that alone will impress too many ponies. They have foci for the competition that’ll let non-unicorns compete, and even though we still would have the advantage, they probably won’t understand why what you’re doing is impressive.”

“Then what do you think I should do? It’s the only spell I know.”

“You make it a performance. Make it interesting to watch. I think I have an idea of how you can do it, too. So-”
