Chapter 7: The Rescue

"Onlooker?" questioned the small corva wondering why he had such a reaction to Tempest's instructions

The gryph got caught off guard as he had forgotten the feathered ball always beaming with happiness around him. "Never thought I'd start getting used to his presence to the extent of forgetting his existence by my side…" he thought.

"Oh-" started Mortifer, but he got cut by Victor who continued: "Are you too unwell to help in the rescue? You could always rest, you were pretty badly injured!" exclaimed the corva

Tempest looked at the two stryxes pondering if Mortifer was in shape enough to indeed help. She seemed satisfied with how he looked since she said: "No need to fly to find the people. You will both stay on land as it is easier to hear the sounds under the snow. Anyway the faster the people are rescued, the faster the houses and shelters will be cleared and you will both be able to have a well deserved rest."

Mortifer's annoyance got increased by her seemingly orders, but scattering through the area to search for people would allow to also search for… shinies. He turned around to face the small corva.

"I will be alright Victor. You should go that way and I’ll go the other way, if you need any help-…", Mortifer's face winced slightly at what he was about to say, "just call for me."

"Okee dokee!" said Victor while hopping up and down in front of the gryph

A few stryxes came by Tempest's sides with windhounds' barrels filled with supply and a few covers.

"Here!", exclaimed Tempest while she handed them the supplies, "These will be the first aids material the people will require when you find them! Now I shall go help the others, I count on you two!" she said while taking off

Victor nodded with a lot of enthusiasm and ran in a random direction, while Mortifer stayed on his ground. As soon as everyone was off his sight, he threw away the material. "Finally, real business.", he thought

As Victor watched Mortifer's silhouette grow smaller in the sky, tears finally fell. He'd really done it now, hadn't he? But then again, why was Mortifer stealing from these innocent villagers, right after a disaster no less? Had they angered him prior without Victor's knowledge? Or was Onlooker just...

At the mention of the gryph's name Victor recalled what he had said before takeoff. "Don't call me that." Then...Onlooker must just be a nickname, right? Why hadn't he been truthful with him? Didn't he trust Victor? After seeing the gryph's criminal display, Victor wasn't so sure that he had come to the village with good intentions in the first place...

Victor suddenly felt a presence behind him. For a brief moment, he felt a strange hopefulness, that it was Onlooker, but he knew that wasn't the case.

"Victor...it'll be alright." Cym's voice was comforting but bitter at the same time. She seemed angered at Onlooker, rightfully so thought Victor. Still, it stung knowing what someone he called a friend was willing to do for personal gain. If that was the case, why was Victor so upset about it then? Shouldn't he be glad to be away from such a morally twisted character? He was sure he *should* feel that way, but for whatever reason, all he felt was...numbness. Numb at the fact that Onlooker had just done what he did without hesitation. Now that he thought back on it, their meeting was rather sketchy, and Victor could've been in real danger if Mortifer had decided to lash out at him immediately.

Whispers began to heighten to chatter as the gathered crowd dispersed, preparing to resume the search and rescue efforts. Tempest had joined Cym at Victor's side, looking solemnly at the young corva.

"...I have to go after him." Victor mumbled.

"What?" Cym asked, not quite having heard the other. Without another word, Victor launched into the air, following in Mortifer's wake, trying desperately to catch up. Tempest and Cym watched from the ground as they both disappeared.

When they were finally out of sight, the two females looked at each other still pondering what they just witnessed. Both their faces were showing mixed feelings between anger and worry…

"That little corva was such a sweetheart throughout the little time I spent with him, it's saddening to see him try to follow someone who is not as kind hearted as him. Although he's still small and frail, he did all he could for that Onlooker…" said Cym as she recalled the fire breath he managed to create for the camp fire earlier. "I do hope wherever they end up, that gryph will treat him well." she added

"Agreed.", was the only reply Tempest gave her

As much as Cym wanted to follow Victor, she knew her priority on the moment was to help the villagers recover from the avalanche. She shook her head and the two of them turned around to watch how the rescue was going. While the windhounds were working hard on finding the people; the villagers with a handful of stryxes were working on shoveling out the spots already flagged for muffed sounds underneath the snow. Few humans, hybrids, pets and even some misfortunate wild creatures were slowly making their way back to the surface.

A warm feeling passed through the silken corva and the gryph as they nodded in agreement. It was time to rejoin them in the search so that everyone would be back to safety.

"We can do this!" they said in unisson while scattering

Tempest headed towards some villagers whom were struggling with huge debris in their way and, although she was strong, Cym preferred to direct herself towards an area of the village where very few people were working on, but that would need more digging than brute force. "We shouldn’t find a lot of people underneath here, once we're done I will go back to see if any of the rescued ones need medicine." thought the silken corva.

Tempest clawed at the heavy debris that the rescuers were struggling with, managing to haul it out of the way enough that the rescuers could begin digging out trapped victims. She used her powerful wings and talons to continue pulling away pieces from the air, managing to hoist piece after piece and toss them aside.

Cym was aiding in the digging effort, offering her wing to the survivors they found buried inside so that they could climb out of the collapsed structure. Once her area was cleared she headed over to the rescue camps set up to keep the survivors warm and help patch up any wounds. She approached one of the first aid stryx there, offering her services. They happily accepted, showing her who was hurt and who was already being tended to by the rest of the handlers from the rescue team.
Cym settled on a young stryx who had yet to be reunited with their mother, trembling and afraid. She did her best to console them and treat any wounds, but she was immediately reminded of Victor's saddened expression when he'd realized he was the reason they were out in the mountains in the first place, and that Onlooker had been hurt because of it.
Victor didn't deserve what that gryph had done to hurt him, even after all he'd done to help Onlooker. And now he was alone, chasing after the gryph who'd caused so much heartbreak to the corva already. Cym's heart ached for Victor, but knew dwelling on it now wouldn't help anyone. She continued to tend to the young stryx, bandaging a wound on their shoulder.

Once Cym had done all she could around the rescue camp, nearly depleting her supplies in the process, she regrouped with Tempest, who'd finished helping with the heavy lifting. The next few hours were spent aiding the rescue efforts in any way they could, all the way into the late hours of the night.

"Some food would probably lift everyone's spirits, don't you think?" Tempest asked, to which Cym realized how hungry she really was.
