Chapter 1: A Stolen Meal

Sansy sighed as she lifted herself up off the ground, looking skyward. The night was young and up above her she caught sight of a large male gryph casually circling the sky. The bright purples and yellows of his underside intrigued her. “I hope I don’t regret this.” Sansy muttered as her curious nature got the best of her. Lifting her wings she took a large jump and ascended into the sky. Her large soil frame was quick to move skywards on confident wings and soon she was on the same level as the large male gryph. “How do you do, my names Sansy.” She introduced herself kindly.

The large purple male eyes her for a moment before he rolled his eyes, seeming to give into the pleasantries. “You may call me Avanti. What brings you into my skies?” He spoke. His voice was smooth and sly as he eyed the young tyto before him. He wasn’t exactly amused by her presence but a thought came to him and he smiled, a more devilish up-to-no-good kind of smile but it befell Sansy as simple kindness. “Nevermind, can you hunt?”

Sansy looked down at her talons and wings and chuckled. “I’m a stryx. Of course I can hunt.” She mused with a grin. To put some weight to her words she began to maneuver the skies, dipping, tucking and swirling about on silent wings. Her talons opened and clenched in the air as she showed off to the stranger. Confident in her abilities.

“Good good, would you join me on a hunt then?” Avanti asked casually. Sansy was quick to nod in acceptance and so Avanti let himself plummet low in the sky. Flying just over the tree tops he began his hunt - though it was going to be more of a performance. Below him he saw a herd of deer and smiled. Deer would be the perfect target for the young tyto following behind him and he chuckled to himself at how well his simple scheme was playing out.

He swooped low towards the herd of deer through the open parts of the forest, talons outstretched though he made a good deal of noise in his flight. The sounds startled the deer and they began to sprint through the woods and with a seemingly annoyed sighed he lifted back into the sky. Out of the trees he locked onto his target and watched as a young doe broke into a large open plain. Seizing the opportunity he dived again, Sansy watching as his timing seemed to be just a bit off and he narrowly avoiding catching the prey in his talons.

“Let me!” Sansy called out as she dived towards the grasses, following in behind Avant as she swooped for the deer, exactly as the gryph had hoped. Talons open she reached out to snatch the deer. The startled creature however suddenly darted to the right and she sunk he talons into its back but didn’t get a good enough grip to pick the doe up. Now though there was no escaping as open wounds hindered her movements. Sansy easily swooped back and picked the doe up in her talons, hoisting her off the ground. With a tight squeeze she sent the doe into her next life and spoke a soft blessing for her before she landed.

Huffing only slightly she smiled proudly at the meal at her feet. As she leaned down to begin plucking the hair of the doe Avanti suddenly swooped in, snatching the carcass up in his talons with perfect aim and an amused sneer. “Dreadfully sorry but I don’t share!” He called out as he took off. Sansy was so flabbergasted by the suddenly stolen meal that she struggled to find her words and get airborne. Once back in the sky she raced after Avanti, cursing him to the moon and back as she tried to catch up to the larger gryph.
