Chapter 1: Events galore 10

Suffice to say, it was more or less chaos in the swamp.

Where in the past there was relative peace with a handler taking control of the missions, the group had none.

It very obviously showed.

Tarshkus, Casiro and Carro acted as one part of the team. Despite Casiro being one of the smallest in the kalacros group standing at ten feet tall, they towered over the other critters in the area.

Morpheus, a frilled raptor with a stunning purple, dreamy coat of feathers streaked with blacks and patches of white, pawed at the ground with the claws on his foot. He was roughly a tad smaller than Casiro.

The unfortunate member was none other than Teddy, a soluno at the height of one feet and eight inches. An amberish brown coat of fur with small pale spots, a fluffed mane and curved horns that curls around their bearish ears. Her green eyes sparked with determination, yet was unable to mask the slightest bit of irritation as she looked back to the larger kalacros.

"It feels like an earthquake whenever you guys are walking around. Can't you be more careful moving? You're scattering all the fallen leaves!" She questioned, flicking her tail impatiently.

"Bold words for someone in stomping height." Casiro rumbled, having to crane his head downwards just to look at the small pipsqueak. Besides the dark emerald kalacros Casiro and Tarshkus snickered clearly enjoying the spectacle.

"Yeah, chew toy. Can't you see we're busy gathering mushrooms? Haverstead needs some, and we're just trying to help." Carro sneers, his lips curled in a wicked smile.

A squawk and a flurry of feathers appeared between the two sides. The beautiful array of feathers were puffed up, Morpheus glaring at the bully of kalacros. "Don't. We're all trying to find items for our respective festivities, so let's try to make it easier on everyone by not trying to instigate a fight."

Tarshkus rolled his eyes. "Yeah, a 'fight'. Something tells me it'd be very one-sided."

Teddy gasped, bringing a paw to her fluffed chest in distain. "If you're going to keep causing trouble, why bother joining us? You could've found another place in the swamp to search for your goodies."

The dark red kalacros grunted, his marbled fur shifting in the warm breeze that passed by. "Then where would we get our entertainment while working? I think it's a win-win..." He trailed off, blackened eyes glancing over to an orange mushroom nearby. Score!

"Doesn't seem like it. You've nearly smashed my pumpkin a couple times." Morpheus huffed, clearly unamused. Clutched in his claws indeed was the familiar orange item, held securely in his grip. The poor pumpkin had many close calls when the avian thought to leave it in one place when he swore he saw a better pumpkin in the distance, only to discover it was one of the many mushrooms the kalacros team needed. By the time he'd go to grab his single, small pumpkin it'd nearly been eaten or stomped on by the large critters.

Teddy had a similar problem. She needed to collect fallen leaves and felt the swamp could offer a decent amount. In the end it became harder to fill the bag she carried than previously anticipated, with the large wings of the kalacros constantly flapping about to cause the leaves to fly all over the place before the soluno had a chance to grab them.

Carro walked through the sludge that made the dark waters of the swamp. It stuck to his legs as he moved through to pluck a mushroom off the ground. "You get protection. The swamp animals that thrive here would make easy prey out of you flightless animals, while we can take you out of here when it's all said and done. All you need to do is put up with us until it's time to leave."

A heavy sigh left Morpheus, the raptor hopping over the water to reach the other side of dry land. The black talon of his thumb pet the pumpkin. "Well I can't wait until this is over and we can go our separate ways. Preferably with me finding an even better pumpkin somewhere around here."

The little soluno sat on the ground, her paws diligently guiding a couple stray leaves into her bag that weren't completely torn or crushed. "I'm surprised you three are even trying to do something good for this 'Haverstead' with how much you guys seem to enjoy terrorizing us." She grumbled. At least there was still a good amount of leaves for her to collect. Teddy wasn't sure if she'd go through this experience again if it meant getting good quality leaves.

"Simple, we're getting something out of it. Why else would we go through the effort?" Tarshkus answered with a nonchalant shrug.

It was leaning towards no, as her green eyes turned to look at the three stooges and the small mushroom pile they were forming and mulled over the darker crimson kala's answer. Definitely not, the leaves weren't worth dealing with these three again.

A small part of her wanted to be petty and steal a couple, maybe teach them a lesson. But knowing those kalacros, it was likely they'd get the wrong lesson. Besides, she didn't want to stoop to their level. Teddy ran a paw down her face, shaking her head. "At least we're almost done."

"I'll drink to that." Morpheus chimed as he trotted towards a sunken patch of the ground. He dug through the dirt upon seeing something orange covered in greenery. With a couple scrapes of his claws to clear it out he found another pumpkin. "I think we have a big enough haul to start heading out of this swamp. I'd hate to get stuck here at night." He grimaced at the thought, his eyes shifting to the trees that stretched into the sky and roots partially visible above the ground. The churning of water and the possible things that lived inside didn't settle the uneasiness he felt looking down at it.

Casiro dragged all the piled mushrooms into a large basket, closing the lid once everything was inside. "Let's get going, then! I'd also like to start cashing in our finds."
