Chapter 1: A siren and her knight

This place was perfect for her practice.

A small forest clearing, right behind the hole in the metal fence around her house.

Swan Song looked around.

Her parents couldn’t see this

She would get grounded for sure.

No one around?

Good.

The tiny foal ducked down as much as she could and crawled through the opening in the fence.

She struggled a bit when her horn got stuck between a few metall wires the fences was made out of, but after she pushed forward with a bit more force she got herself free.

However the action made her fall over right onto her face and into the dirt.

She sniffed a bit as she pulled herself back onto her hooves and then held her nose, that got the brunt of her fall.

‘Ouch..’

Swan Song blinked a few tiny tears away and rubbed her sore nose before walking onto the forest clearing.

She could feel the summer sun falling through the treetops and warming up her short dark fur and throwing bright spots onto the dark forest ground.

It was quiet.

Only a few birds could be heard singing their songs.

Their voices echoed through the clearing and through the entire forest like the voices of ghosts.

This truly was the perfect place!

Swan Song walked over to a rock and jumped.

Her jump was clumsy and not high enough, so she slammed into the side of the rock and had to grab onto it with her hooves and lift herself up with all her strength.

She gasped for air and just layed there on the rock for a few second catching her breath.

Then she stood up and straightened herself up just like her parents had told her.

‚Always hold your head high, when you are on stage.‘ they always said ‚You are the middle of attention. The star of the show. Act like it.‘

The small foal took a deep breath and began to sing the first verse of the song her mother always made her sing for practice.

She could hear her voice echoing through the trees and she had to stop to listen.

Her echo needed a few long seconds to fade out.

The foal smiled and started to sing the verse again, this time she didn’t wait for her echo to disappear but sang on top of it, letting her voice mix with the echo.

That was a canon, right?

That’s what her father had explained to her.

She liked it.

She stopped again to listen to her two echoes fade out once again.

But this time a rustling in the bushes next to her pulled her out of her concentration.

In the side of her vision she noticed a movement, but wasn’t fast enough to react.

Something tackled her to the surface of the rock.

She felt two hooves pressing down onto her chest and when she opened her eyes again, she looked into the orange eyes of another foal standing above her.

„Stop right there, siren!“ she yelled into Swan Songs face and flapped with her tiny pegasus wings. „You’re magic might work on peasants but not on a true knight of Equestria!“

„S-Siren?“ Swan Song gasped having trouble breathing feeling the other foals hooves pressing onto her chest. “ What‘s a Siren?“

The pegasus foal looked at her confused.

„Are you kidding? That’s what you-„

The strange foal stopped as she looked Swan Song over and her eyes slowly widend the determined expression leaving her face.

„Oh.“

She released Swan Song and made a few steps backwards just staring wide eyed.

„You..you’re not a siren?“

„No? I’m a unicorn. Just like mom and dad.“ Swan song huffed and stood up again.

She held her head high, pushing out her chest proudly while she inspected the pony in front of her.

The strangers azure colored pelt was messy, with leaves and small branches stuck to it.

Her mane wasn’t any better, being all over the place.

Swan Song scoffed.

The pegasus foal ducked down a bit under her judging gaze.

„I-I’m sorry. I just heard someone singing so beautifully in the forest. and thought-... Well see Granddad always told me that if i ever heard a beautiful voice singing in an abandoned place that it’s most likely a siren trying to lure me into my doom“

„I didn’t try to lure anyone. For you information, i was practicing for my next singing competition that i intent to win. So if you don’t mind, shoo.“

The unicorn foal made a shooing motion with one of her hooves.

The small pegasus however only widened her eyes in response.

„Next singing competition? Woah! How many did you win already?“

Swan Song stance faltered a bit as she let her gaze fall down onto her hooves.

„Well,..none. It’s my first...But i have to win it! My parents always won theirs! So i have to win too!“

„Ohhh! Then you’re like me!“ the pegasus said with a bright smile „My parents were both knights and i will become one too when i grow up!“

„I thought you said you already were a knight.“

The pegasus foal rubbed the back of her neck looking to the side.

„Well..okay, that was a tiny lie..But just you wait!“

She then flapped with her way to small wings and straightened herself up, the determined expression she had , had during her attack returned to her face.

„I will be the strongest, bravest knight ever! And i will keep everypony safe from wild magic!“

Swan Song only blinked in response not really knowing what to say to that declaration.

The pegasus foal then leaned forward a bit.

„Azure Chaser.“

„Huh?“

„That’s my name. Azure Chaser.“

„Oh.“

„Well, what’s yours?“

Swan Song hesitated.

Her parents always warned her about telling strangers her name.

Then again they also said to never even talk to strangers, but she already did so it was too late anyways.

She cleared her throat.

„You may call me, Swan Song.“

„Pretty name.“ Azure Chaser commented:,, Pretty and fitting name for a pony with a beautiful voice!“

Swan Song suddenly felt a wave of warmth sweeping over her face when azure chaser said that. She was confused where exactly it came from.

Azure chaser came a bit closer towards her.

„Hey, do you wanna play something? You wanna play castle?“

Castle? How do you play that?“

„Well, let’s say this rock is our castle and we have to defend it from evil wild magic!“

Swan Song blinked confused.

But there was no wild magic here in canterlot, right?

Her parents had explained that Princess Dawn bringer‘s magic protected the city from it.

Azure chaser watched Swan Song for a moment before her attention was drawn in by a noise coming from the thicket.

A rustle in one of the bushes.

She ducked down like a cat would when fixating on a mouse.

„See! We are getting attacked already! Charge!“

The small pegasus jumped off the rock and dove right into the bush, her wings flapping while doing so.

Swan Song gasped as she watched the other foal disappear into the thicket that shortly after started to shake violently as if a fight was happening inside.

The unicorn felt fear crawl up in her chest as she heard a weird animal sound.

A raccoon jumped out of the bush and scurried off into the forest while loudly complaining with it’s weird chattering voice.

Then it was quiet.

Swan Song gulped.

„Azure chaser?“

Silence.

Swan Song jumped off the rock and approached the bush carefully.

„Azu-„

Suddenly the other foal rolled out of the bush and ended up on her back right in front of Swan Song on the ground.

Azure chaser spat out a leaf from her mouth, before giving the unicorn foal a toothy grin.

„The knight returns victorious!“

Swan Song laughed at the sight, making the pegasus’s smile widen in response.

„Well, does the knight get a reward for protecting the princess?“ she asked.

Swan Song just smiled and without much thinking planted a kiss onto the other foals cheek.

Azure chasers eyes widened,  her face growing red.

„You’re so brave ,my knight.“ Swan Song laughed:“ But next time i shall follow you to battle.“

Azure Chaser jumped onto her hooves still a bit red in the face.

She grinned.

„Then we shall teach our enemies to fear us together, my princess! Let`s start an all out offensive! Let me hear your battle cry!“

Azure Chaser roared loudly, her voice echoing through the forest, startling some of the birds that took off into the sky.

Swan Song hesitated for a second before joining in into the roar with all her might.

The two foals then charged into the forest thicket fighting off shadows and imaginary enemies that tried to conquer their stone castle until the sun was setting on the horizon.
