Chapter 2: The Glowing Reef

Ripple made her way through the corals that she has traveled day to see. She is not one to usually go on long travels to sightsee, but there is always a time in a dragon's life to do something opposite of their routine.
She has heard about this coral reef that mirrors the moons that shine on it. The young aqurions even theorized that it might have come from said moons and that’s why it’s shining so brightly in the light. But obviously, there are other explanations and kids aren’t exactly the best source of information. But the way they talked about the reef perked up Ripple's mind.

It was really soon when the clouds parted and Enule grew larger as more of it was showing. Its rays hit the corals around Ripple, not too harshly, but they started to glow. It looked marvelous, almost like the world around her was radiating with energy. Ripple also started to feel joyous, watching the small tropical fish swim by and reflect the soft glows of the corals.

As Enule was uncovered for its full size, the reef also started to glow stronger, now reaching the surface. From above it was a different sight, still beautiful though. Ripple spent her entire night darting between the corals and chasing the reflecting fish that lived there, just having the time of her life. When she tired out, Ripple swam to the top, to look down at the reef to see it whole. Unfortunately, her sight couldn’t see far enough, there was a blue glow everywhere under her. The dulled-out silhouette of the reef was gorgeous, blurred to unrecognition, but somewhat compelling. Ripple felt she needed to go back, to play around more. When she reached back down the waters were calmer. She wasn’t darting around trying to catch some fish, she played out the stored energy inside her and now she was thinking more peacefully.

She started what she does best, examining her surroundings and searching for some rarities that she could bring home with her to her den. Looking through glowy holes and tight gaps, but unfortunately, none held any gems she was interested in. While searching Ripple many times has bumped into the coral and broke it. It was still glowing and the smaller pieces looked absolutely gorgeous. Almost like fairy dust.

Many times Ripple had to abort her search in order to hide or to move away from the location. Other aquariums were in the area too and she wasn’t eager to meet anyone right now. She just wanted to find her treasure in peace. Too many tried to steal from her and now she distrusts anyone who dares to go near her whenever she is treasure hunting.

Unfortunately, her searching was in vain, at least for now. The moon was starting to go down and the faint rays of the sun can already be observed on the opposite side of the sky. The whole night's work took the energy out of Ripple, even though she enjoyed her time there she couldn’t wait to get home. Her body was sore from swimming for so long.

She started her journey back to her territory, the reef around her was glowing just as dull as when Ripple arrived there, but unfortunately, it won’t going to get stronger anytime soon. It was a sad goodbye, Ripple started to feel she should move here, but her home was where she grew up, she can’t just leave it for something she would grow bored of in time.

She wasn’t smiling anymore as she left, still looking back and imagining the moonlit reef. After she fully left the area she didn’t glance back at all, there was no reason to, she was just focused on getting back home.

Ripple sluggishly slumped onto her sleeping spot in her cave. It was a long journey she had just taken. She still fondly remembers back to the sight of the reef in the moonlight. So unfortunate she couldn’t find a souvenir to remind her to it, especially when she grows older and starts to forget. That’s why she always hated to go on long journeys, she doesn’t have anyone to tell her experiences to and when she passes there won’t be any memory of what she experienced.

As she curled up, thinking that her week-long journey to the glowing reefs was in vain, she noticed a small coral, stuck to her tailfin, slightly glowing at the light coming through the opening of the cave. Ripple closed her eyes smiling to herself.
